August fledglings fly over here - chatting and Flying will help us persevere!

Here we go again - another month for us to tackle our clutter and get on top of our housework!

If you’re struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (can't have anyone over syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (something that undermines family fun), you need Flylady.

Flylady is a system for managing housework. Starting with babysteps, it builds up into a routine which becomes second nature. In theory, once you are used to the system, you will have a tidy house you are not embarrassed by and plenty of time to get on with more interesting things.

Flylady banishes the panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. If you fall off the Flylady bandwagon, it’s no problem: you just jump back in where you are and carry on.

Don't sign up for the Flylady emails as you will be inundated! All the information you need will be linked here on this thread on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, Flylady's steps and routines will be listed here on this thread.

Flylady uses a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  1. start or repeat baby steps
  1. repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone
  1. reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

(And detailed deep cleaning in each zone for those who have made real progress).

More info here on getting started (but ignore step one!) and Flying lessons. Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.

Try to ignore Flylady’s purple prose (hard, I know) - the underlying system is sound!

Three key points to keep in mind:

  1. No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine.
  1. You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  1. It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy overnight - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new, then trying to spend 15 mins decluttering and doing the babysteps is the most you should expect of yourself. Lots of us here like posting our ‘to do’ or ‘ta da’ lists and they can look quite scary. Don’t be put off.

If all else fails, try the power of three – just pick three things that most need doing and focus on those.

And if you have visitors coming over this afternoon and need a quick fix NOW, try Flylady's crisis clean.

We all know each other pretty well on this thread and some of us have been around for a long time, but all lurkers, oldies and newcomers are very welcome!

Actually i am really impressed with the fact that the company not only rang me to inform me of being unsucessful but also provided full and comprehensive feedback on the application. Hats off to them, when some companies cba to even let you know you were unsucessful.

Whoknows i am jealous of you star gazing we have full cloud cover

BitchyVstheUFOs · 12/08/2014 22:16

Erm SC could dd be hitting puberty and heading towards periods. Pre period cramping a possibility? Not to frighten you into feeling old or anything.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 12/08/2014 22:27

I saw one and then the mist started thickening up and I've come back indoors. Might try again in a bit. It's very damp and dewy out there though.

saturn · 12/08/2014 22:27

Just a quick ta da: sink shined, dressed to shoes this morning (not quite first thing, but better than usual), browsed Flylady website (so much better than getting hundreds of e-mails I could never keep up with)...haven't done the sticky note thing, did anyone else do this? Don't much fancy post it notes stuck round the house Hmm

Will try and catch up in the morning, but need to sleep now...good night Smile

slackcabbage · 12/08/2014 22:43

Nope; think none of us (or very few anyway) do sticky note thing Saturn. Personally think it is slightly batty (even for me Grin).

Bitchy that is impressive when so few companies even bother to reply to applications. Might be worth seeing if you could apply again having applied feedback etc.

Don't worry, definitely qualify as 'old' already!! Grin and yes, it did cross my mind that this could be the start of puberty. DD is definitely growing in all the right places and has put on a tiny bit of weight since she started to eat Belgian school dinners and although very thin, is a lot less skeletal ifyswim. We've already had the talk, bought all the books, and she has the 'discreet pencil case' full of supplies just in case. Hoping for her sake that it is not this early though!

Also hoping it is not appendicitis (but pain seems a bit too low down)

Sootball · 12/08/2014 22:59

Have just read through thread very fast. Promised myself an early night tonight as I started today very early and start my 4 12hour days as of tomorrow. Spent all evening working tonight so feeling virtuous. House is a teeny bit of a tip but washing up is done, bathrooms are clean, floors swept and laundry put away.

Anyone watching the meteor showers?

toffee you said you have a printout of the fly lady routines? Is that something I can download? I literally didn't get to MN today until now so I think I need a paper copy! :-)

ToffeeWhirl · 12/08/2014 23:05

OK, here's the promised round up. Blimey, you lot have been busy and now I remember why I don't do many round ups.

WhoKnows’s children are staying with her parents for a couple of days whilst she works. She and DH were able to enjoy dinner out tonight, but then he –-buggered off-- went to his astronomy club (does this make you ‘star-crossed lovers’? Wink). She is trying to avoid CHAOS because she has visitors arriving for a few days on Thursday evening. She is also planning a camping trip for early September (brave, I call it). MrWhoKnows is in trouble because he didn't write something on the calendar and they are now double booked (have had the exact same situation here and when I called to explain to my neighbour, she said her DH was just as bad too!). (PS: Did you hear back from your Mumsnet namesake?).

dizzyday is still flouting Number 17 . She is making my mouth water with tales of freshly grown fruit and vegetables from her garden Envy.

saturn is worrying about Babystep Number 2: getting dressed to lace-up shoes. (I say: don’t worry about it. Just use the bits of Flylady that suit you. I need time to come round in the morning too, so pottering time without proper shoes is essential. I do, however, get more done without the pottering time so it’s limited to weekends and holidays only). She has a proper post rack although she doesn’t sort through it Grin.

DizzyKipper has been juggling dog and DC and not finding time to play. MrDizzyKipper had an unfortunate confrontation with a lamppost which is going to prove a bit costly by the sound of it. Commiserations. Small victory tonight in that she and DH got the washing up, cleaning of dining table, and putting away of washing done before she left for work this evening Grin.

Alice’s alarm (small children) went off as usual at 5am and she needed a lot of coffee to wake up. Like me (and several of us), her bedroom is the last room in the house to get tidied, which means it is rarely tidy. But she is determined to tackle it. She is also dealing with 10-years’ worth of paperwork .

Trazzle has had an infestation. She was meant to be resting today, but has been washing four pairs of bedclothes and countless towels instead. And it rained. And she doesn’t have a tumbledryer. No, not a good day .

NickNacks is also battling an infestation . She has been ploughing through her lists and cooking for six.

Bitchy’s DS was hard work today. She has attempted to wear him out by training him in the important Flying skill of decluttering and also taking him on a long trip to IKEA. She didn’t get the job she applied for, but that wasn’t surprising as she only had one hour to write the application. (Good to get useful feedback though).

SC has been a wonderful host. So wonderful, in fact, that some of her guests want to come back again (I understand about your friend’s difficult time and it’s lovely of you to want to help her as much as possible, but I do think you need to have some family time now - and a bit of a rest). She is hoping to get away for some time with DH.

coffeeandcream had a very productive day at home – lots of Flying and errands. Also had to do DH’s Flying for him Angry.

Blue is still coping with post-holiday chaos and worrying about friends seeing it all in the morning. (Would an “Excuse the mess – we’re just back from holiday” save you the frantic tidy up?).

Sootball - I hope your DD is on the mend from her fall.

And Plod - welcome to the thread. I hope we haven't frightened you off with all our chatting - we are a bit prone to that here.

SC - Sorry to see your DD isn't well. I hope she isn't coming down with something. DH said appendicitis was in a very definite place - he could have drawn a pen mark round the pen - although I'm not sure it's always as clearcut as this. Hopefully, it will turn out to be nothing, though.

Finally - Lairy. Am hoping no news is good news. She has gone suspiciously quiet. Hopefully she will be back to update us as soon as she can.

Night all.

Woohoo, crisis clean averted! Meeting friends in town after all. Get to see them, have done a bit of tidying and don't have to do a major rescue so win all round. :)

Have achieved:
Cycle ride into town
Library with boys
Played in park
Picked up shoes and promptly left them at Sainsbo's
Bits of shopping
Internet shop arrived and put away
3 baskets of laundry away
Another load washed and dried
All cases of French wine and beer important groceries put away
Bit of work
Few hotspots dealt with
Arrangements for tomorrow

Hope your DD feels better soon, SC.

Sorry to hear about calendar clash, WhoKnows

Hmm, might have to look into Fat Fairy app, Toffee. Is it also twee and purple?

ToffeeWhirl · 12/08/2014 23:08

SC - drawn a pen mark round the pain, not pen, sorry.

OP posts:
ToffeeWhirl · 12/08/2014 23:13

Woohoo, Blue! Great result! Enjoy your time out with your friends. And yes, the Fat Fairy app is a bit twee and purple as a lot of it is direct from the website (the daily flight plan, for instance). However, the routines and tasks are in plain type, so you do get some relief.

Why has it made me unaccountably excited that it has a 15-minute timer? Confused I already have a kitchen timer, FFS. I think I'm getting very boring in my middle age.

Have only just settled DS2 to sleep. Am getting fed up with this. Sometimes I think he needs melatonin too. And he is going through a phase of needing me to sit in his room with him whilst he settles to sleep, which takes over an hour. Am thinking maybe I should invest in some new story CDs...

Off to make hot chocolate for DS1 and hand over his melatonin. A bit late tonight.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 12/08/2014 23:15

Thanks Toffee, great round up. The namesake issue has been resolved, sort of, we have spoken and it's a genuine coincidence, she has nc'd but is still a WhoKnows. So, I don't think she will be mistaken for me as such but it could get confusing if we are ever on a thread together.

ToffeeWhirl · 12/08/2014 23:19

Sootball - I cut and pasted the daily routine bit from the daily flight plan and put it into a Word document. Then I typed in the daily focus, ie.

Monday: clean the house (one hour).

Tuesday: plan your week.

Wednesday: anti-procrastination day.

Thursday: run errands.

Friday: declutter bag and car. Put the recycling out.

I also added in any personal reminders, eg. put the rubbish out on Monday.

Have printed it out and put it up in my kitchen. It really helps me to see it all in print. And if I go online to check, I know I'll just end up browsing for hours.

Great round-up Toffee!! [bows head in respect

ToffeeWhirl · 12/08/2014 23:20

WhoKnows - glad the issue has (mainly) been resolved. Did you say, "But I was here first?" and stamp your foot? Grin

OP posts:
ToffeeWhirl · 12/08/2014 23:22

SC - thank you. Am still not up to your standard in terms of regular round ups though.

OP posts:
slackcabbage · 12/08/2014 23:24

Argh, posted too soon. Yes, thx, re: appendicitis. Can look at my own scar from years back and compare! Grin It can also start in middle of tum (over navel) and then work itself down & right ifyswim. Have been consulting Dr Google Wink DD fast asleep atm thankfully. I am creeping about nervously on night-watchman duty in case she wakes up in pain ...although dh keeps hissing at me to ruddy well go to sleep but I'm too anxious ... .

slackcabbage · 12/08/2014 23:25

Thx Toffee but honestly think I only managed 2 or 3 round-ups during my last thread-leading stint! And have loads more time on my hands than you do!

slackcabbage · 12/08/2014 23:27

Toffee looking at your print-out, am thinking it's a shame we can't have 'stickies' on this thread setting out daily focus and some of the routines ... and why not the baby-steps while we are at it ... would certainly make posting links less long-winded!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 12/08/2014 23:29

No, I just pointed out the potential for confusion/embarrassment (one of you might have told her to polish her knob or something!).

SC - fingers crossed for a peaceful night for you and DD.

BitchyVstheUFOs · 13/08/2014 00:05

Snurk @ knob polishing GrinGrinGrin

Links can be long winded up i cheat and have a note pad file with basic links on and then just edit the babystep no and the day for most of the links which does make it easier although often results in me not even looking at the links

Totally failed at baby step 17 which is going to be a pain cos i am shattered. Have, however, been looking at free online courses. Got my eye on a couple, got another site to look at too so will have a whole heap of options.

BitchyVstheUFOs · 13/08/2014 00:06

*but i cheat not up i cheat

GoingGoingGoth · 13/08/2014 00:14

Quick place mark (so much for an early night before school)

SC Fx it's not appendicitis

ToffeeWhirl · 13/08/2014 00:17

Arf at scaring off namesake with knob polishing, Who Grin.

Bitchy and SC - I usually click on the previous day's links, so I have all the pages open, then change the day if necessary. That's a bit long-winded with the babystep, though, as you then have to click back to the main babysteps page before clicking onto the right step for the next day. It is all a bit faffy.

SC - ah yes, I remember DH saying that was exactly what happened to him, with the pain relocating. In fact, he knew it was appendicitis when he went into hospital, as it fitted the online descriptions so exactly. I didn't realise you'd already been through it yourself, though, so you will remember exactly what it's like. I really hope your DD is fine tomorrow.

DS1 is still awake, but at least he's taken his melatonin and is settled under a duvet on the sofa (still too hot in his room). Off to bed shortly. Night.

DizzyKipper · 13/08/2014 07:37

Oh dear SC, I hope you managed to sleep in the end.

I've not been able to read all through the messages, I'll try to catch up later. Right now I feel I should get going with productiveness. I have to drop DH off at work this morning and then get to the midwife appointment. DD has already been telling me to help her clean up her toy food (which she had just dumped all over the floor) - still, it's nice that she likes to be tidy, this house may just have hope if at least one of us does.

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 13/08/2014 09:05

SC hope your dd is feeling better. I'm probably not much help, but when I had appendicitis, the pain was actually almost at the bladder area, as well as on the side. And I have heard of people having pain in the middle or left, but radiating to the right, but then eventually settling on the lower right. So it can vary a bit. Is it possible she might have a bladder infection? Perhaps push fluids a bit just in case?? In most cases, an increase in water isn't going to do any damage, whereas for the bladder it can help. Just a thought.

I spent last night watching televisions, while manually shredding a bag of papers with my shredding scissors. So one bag down, about 10 to go. (small carrier bags, in a box - how sad is that? SC you still think you have more than me?? Grin)
