Here we go again - another month for us to tackle our clutter and get on top of our housework!

If you’re struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (can't have anyone over syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (something that undermines family fun), you need Flylady.

Flylady is a system for managing housework. Starting with babysteps, it builds up into a routine which becomes second nature. In theory, once you are used to the system, you will have a tidy house you are not embarrassed by and plenty of time to get on with more interesting things.

Flylady banishes the panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. If you fall off the Flylady bandwagon, it’s no problem: you just jump back in where you are and carry on.

Don't sign up for the Flylady emails as you will be inundated! All the information you need will be linked here on this thread on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, Flylady's steps and routines will be listed here on this thread.

Flylady uses a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  1. start or repeat baby steps
  1. repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone
  1. reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

(And detailed deep cleaning in each zone for those who have made real progress).

More info here on getting started (but ignore step one!) and Flying lessons. Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.

Try to ignore Flylady’s purple prose (hard, I know) - the underlying system is sound!

Three key points to keep in mind:

  1. No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine.
  1. You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  1. It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy overnight - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new, then trying to spend 15 mins decluttering and doing the babysteps is the most you should expect of yourself. Lots of us here like posting our ‘to do’ or ‘ta da’ lists and they can look quite scary. Don’t be put off.

If all else fails, try the power of three – just pick three things that most need doing and focus on those.

And if you have visitors coming over this afternoon and need a quick fix NOW, try Flylady's crisis clean.

We all know each other pretty well on this thread and some of us have been around for a long time, but all lurkers, oldies and newcomers are very welcome!

Woken up by DS1 at 4.15. He'd told me he didn't need his melatonin earlier, but if he takes it he's always asleep within the hour.

At least, once I'd managed to get him to sleep, I was able to cut his talons nails with impunity.

Wide awake now and drinking hot chocolate.

OP posts:
ToffeeWhirl · 09/08/2014 05:31

Er, that's me who's wide awake now, not DS1, who is sleeping peacefully now.

NOT PREGNANT!!!!!!!!!!

Guests are still here, so haven't had much time to catch up, but AF has arrived. It's not terribly comfy, but I don't care!!!

And I've got another 2 interviews!

Whoopee!!!!!!!!

BitchyVstheUFOs · 09/08/2014 09:42

Grin carpe glad you got the news you wanted.

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 09/08/2014 10:12

Carpe glad that worked out okay! Grin Congrats on the non-pregnancy. Never thought you'd be thrilled to get cramps, eh? Best of luck on the interviews!

Toffee ds1 wakes up routinely a couple times a night even with melatonin, however, if I don't give it to him in the evening, he won't go to sleep at all. I don't like to go online and MN when he's up at night (unless it's a particularly long stretch like 30+), as then I cannot get back to sleep when he finally does.

CallingAllEngels · 09/08/2014 10:21

Smile carpe

Raining all last night but now the air is fresh and clean and the wind is up. Lovely!

Just about to go out and weed the driveway while DH starts sorting the office with DS in tow /playing in his room.

ta da
wash on

slackcabbage · 09/08/2014 10:26

Carpe so glad it turned out the way you wanted it! Thanks

Sorry you've had yet another broken night Toffee

Still catching up from lower down thread:

How are you feeling now Nicknacks? Hopefully a lot better!

Mercury so sorry- just read down thread about your mum's bf. It's good you are there to offer support. Hope your dgd continues to improve and good to hear that your dgm has settled ok in respite care x

Btw - regularly have a stall at twice-yearly (spring & early autumn) second hand dc clothes sales - selling all of dd's cast offs - and make a surprising amount of £££ despite marking them all down massively. It's a lot of effort and quite a knackering day but really worth it. Advise getting loads of change from bank in advance and have somewhere secure (like bum bag) to keep the money in (someone tried, unsuccessfully, at the busiest time, when everyone was crushing around the stall, to nick our money tin). Also suggest marking EVERYTHING so when people ask "how much is this?" over and over, you can just say - it is all marked on the label (it's hard to think up prices on the spot with everyone crushing around you - although you inevitably mark down for bulk purhases or as day goes on.). Having a few spare helpers (older dc?) on hand to 'police' the stall is really helpful when it is busy, as the crush can sometimes get a bit intimidating/items go missing (or maybe its just the brocantes we attend are particularly busy for some reason). Oh and, at this time of year, coats in reasonable condition, and long sleeved winter pjs go like the clappers. Oh and it's useful to supply old carrier bags too as people tend to buy stacks of stuff.

How's the potty training going Engels?

Not sure I've said hello to Lairy - very exciting about imminent mini-Lairy!

Alice & Ellie sorry you are both having to deal with your xs' financial issues - doesn't seem at all fair.

Newlark how did the wardrobe decluttering go in the end?

Feetheart how brilliant is your 8 yr old ds with his fund-raising! He sounds very precocious!

Goth aye throwing a three-monthly strop is the only way I can get dh to do anything in the house (usually involves physical lifting that I can't do myself- he certainly doesn't volunteer)

Coffeeandcream did you get together with your neighbour in the end? Thanks for offering to run a thread some time in the future - will pm you about links!

Big feathery waves to everyone else!

slackcabbage · 09/08/2014 10:27

Crikey Engels yes to that! It's lovely and fresh here again too now - the humidity over the past few days has been suffocating!

ToffeeWhirl · 09/08/2014 10:47

SC - excellent advice about running a stall - thanks. I hadn't thought of selling winter clothes, only toys, but that's a brilliant idea, as we have piles of the stuff taking up room in cupboards.

Carpe - so glad to hear you had the result you wanted and can now focus on job applications/interviews.

Alice - very sensible of you not to go online when your DS wakes you up. I did go back to bed at about 6 and mumbled to DH to let me sleep in, so he let me sleep till 10. Am still feeling a bit groggy now, though, and hoping DS2 will stay busy with a Lego project he's working on, as I'm not up to his energy levels yet. DS1 is still fast asleep, of course.

It was amazing to see the difference not taking melatonin made to DS1. He was in tears because he was so tired, but couldn't sleep. We should have had it for him years ago.

No sign of Lairy since Wednesday

Didn't do the washing up last night, thanks to nodding off with DS2, so I have the welcoming sight of piles of dirty plates to greet me. Unless DH has done it whilst I slept in .

Hope everyone has a good day.

Congratulations Carpe Smile

Thank you for your kind words and advice SC I will get some labels today

I'm taking dm to the village she grew up in for a nice walk and some nostalgia this afternoon. Hopefully some fresh air, a spot of geocaching and a change of scenery will help her feel recharged. She is constantly worrying about gp and trying to get things organised for them whilst grievingSad

Dp and I have already got quite a lot done this morning.

Ta da
beds made
washing up
drying up
downstairs hoovered
downstairs dusted
Laundry sorted and put away
Washload done and hung out
Another washload done

Before taking dm out I need to:
Hoover upstairs
Empty the rubbish out of the car
Small pile of ironing

CallingAllEngels · 09/08/2014 15:17

Ta da
drive and front garden weeded - looks so much better
90 mins working in back garden weeding while ds ran around like a meerkat and occasionally "helped" me
ds and I showered
2nd wash on

Dh has been decluttering the office all day. He looked rather overwhelmed as he shredded, sorted and doscovered things he thought long gone. So I quoted FL at him, "it didn't get like this in one day..." Grin 95% of it is his and has been there since before I moved here (almost exactly 7 years ago...missed the 'anniversary' !) or paperwork he's just dumped there over the last decade. He has a stack of about 20 Men's Health magazine and I've never seen him look at them!

He is rather cheered by losing over a kilo last week though.

to do
washing up
sort today's washing
dinner

ToffeeWhirl · 09/08/2014 16:39

Well done to you and your DH today, Engels!

That sounds a lovely idea for your DM and you, Mercury. Try to take some time for yourself too.

Have been out chasing butterflies with DS2. Am now about to wash my hair and tart myself up get ready for a night out with DH and friends. Not sure when I'll be back to do the links, but will pop in tomorrow morning if I'm too sozzled tired later.

Have a lovely evening everyone.

I'm happy to do linkies tonight if you like Toffee! Think you deserve a day off!!

I'm feeling refreshed because dh was a hero today and took dd and child guests out to Mini-Europe allowing me time to have some head space, watch Channel 4 racing (Shergar cup today!) and soak in a lovely bubble bath! Ahhhh!

Back to work though now cooking for hoardes ... .

Hope everyone has a lovely evening!!

CallingAllEngels · 09/08/2014 17:21

Glad to hear you had a break sc - I miss my bath! May slap a facepack on tonight and soak my feet if I can reach them

Supermarket run for essential supplies

sending calming vibes your way Alice

Trazzletoes · 10/08/2014 09:24

Hi, I'm still here and still following the thread, just haven't had much time for posting.

Day at home hoping to declutter today... But DH is taking DS to the cinema this morning while I stay at home with DD and then he's planning on watching the football this afternoon so I can't see that I'm going to achieve much as I'll be entertaining both children then. Ah well I can try!

Trazzletoes · 10/08/2014 09:29

And, off-topic, I've been trying to make more of an effort with my appearance - dressed to make-up and all that. I discovered a new hairstyle on YouTube (I only ever wear my hair in a ponytail and have done when it's been long enough since I was about 11).

No one noticed. at least it didn't take much effort!

CallingAllEngels · 10/08/2014 09:37

Whenever I go into school with either eye make up on or lenses in (or both) my students always tilt their heads when they come into my classroom, like they're trying to work out what's different!

coffeeandcream · 10/08/2014 09:58

I never thought of YouTube for learning new hairstyles Trazzle, pony tail is my default hairstyle, just because I have no time for much else, plus I'm a but intimidated by the thousands of hair products and gadgetry.

Hope your day goes ok Alice, happy holidays to Engles

ToffeeWhirl · 10/08/2014 10:17

Had a lovely evening with friends last night - lots of wine, gorgeous home-cooked food, great company.

DH is feeling a bit fragile this morning, but I seem to be fine so far.

Apologies for the late linkies.

It's time for Babystep Number 10: learn the power of 15 minutes.

Today's focus is to renew your spirit.

Today's flight plan is here.

There are no missions at the weekend.

Enjoy your Sunday.
