Here is the cleaner as presented in last week's programme:

mix in a spray bottle
2 tsp borax
2 tbsp vinegar
2 cups of water
a few lavender oil drops

Skribble · 14/09/2006 23:00

Where do you get borax and what is it??

Gillian76 · 14/09/2006 23:03

I can't imagine how all that vinegar smells...

Skribble · 14/09/2006 23:04

That was my though when they are happily squirting mirros with water and vinager solutions
?????

winnie · 14/09/2006 23:05

the lavender gets rid of the vinegar smell. I use vinegar to clean windows and mirrors it is fab.

winnie · 14/09/2006 23:17

borax

Skribble · 14/09/2006 23:19

Ok where can I buy it in a real shop??

winnie · 14/09/2006 23:31

larger branches of Boots

Branster · 15/09/2006 10:23

i got borax from my local chemist but you might have to pre-order it.

otherwise
this website
where they even sell white vinegar, bicarbonate of soda etc.

you can use any essential oil you like. i personally don't particularly like the lavander smell so i might try pine needle oil instead.

good luck!

JackieNo · 15/09/2006 11:33

Great site Branster - thank you.

MadameButterfly · 15/09/2006 13:37

Thank you

I thought borax was in it, so I got some from Wilkinsons earlier in the week. I need to get some vinegar and lavendar oil now.

Ok I will try boots, will it be at pharmacy or out on the shelves?

makemineadouble · 15/09/2006 21:05

Hi, sorry to jump straight in! emergency dd has leaned back on cream leather sofa with red permanent hair dye!! not bigger then 50p mark but dont know how to tackle??? bleach?

Branster · 15/09/2006 21:35

oh dear makemineadouble
i don't know but i'd say bleach & leather not the best idea
have you tried baby wipes?
i've know ciggarete ash (the kind that accumulates in an ashtray) is good at removing hair dye marks from human skin (you know the kind you get around your hairline sometimes) but i've never tried myself. leather is like any skin so would require careful cleaning.
i hope someone can help.

makemineadouble · 15/09/2006 23:33

Branster thank you shall I try ash ? got smoker here in house ? have to leave this now till morn...! have wiped with water (maybe dilute) tried babywipe my old fav! nothing! like skin you say? maybe peroxide?

Branster · 16/09/2006 14:19

try the ash, it's unlikely to stain imho.
let us know how you get on.
also, look up in yellow pages for a furniture restaurer, maker etc , give them a call and ask for their opinion.

Branster · 16/09/2006 14:32

aha, i've found something in my cleaning folder (i know, how sad is that! i even have a folder for all the tips i find in magazines)

taken from In Style magazine a couple of years ago,it says:
''try using cuticle remover to get spots out of elather. rub in on the spot, wait 10 minutes and then massage the are with a cloth dipped in more cuticle remover. wipe down thoroughly with a clean cloth''

also, ask your local shoe mender (usually located in a dry cleaners shop) what they reccomend, after all they know about leather.

if all else fails, try some white spirit or biological washing powder or that magic sponge you can buy in robert dyas or wilkinson they advertise it on tv supposed to remove all sorts of stains and is made by jlm or similar company. with all these i'd recommend you test underneath the sofa first to see no discoloration occurs in the process on the elather.

makemineadouble · 16/09/2006 15:33

Branster you little star...x cuticle remover worked like dream thank you thank you thank you

Branster · 16/09/2006 20:51

that's extraodrinary makemineadouble!!!
i'm glad it worked.
i'll go and pat my 'cleaning' folder on your behalf.

Skribble · 16/09/2006 20:55

That tip is worth starting a ceaning file for. MIl has a cream leather suite and my kids love drawing, bad combination.
