Freezer for the garage

About this time of year I think it would be good to have a bit more freezer space (we have a fridge freezer with 2.5 drawers of freezer). I've got kilos of runner beans, rhubarb, the apple trees are laiden and the greenhouse is full of tomatoes.

Can anyone recommend a small, cheap chest freezer that will fit in the back of the garage ?

We went for an upright freezer because it takes a lot less floor space and (what with needing to open the lid upwards on a chest freezer) didn't take much more vertical space, certainly enough for another shelf above. Plus we rarely lose things in the depths.

Ours is an Electrolux, but they don't make the freestanding double height upright any more.

You used to be able to get freezers that had about the same footprint as a regular under the counter fridge - maybe they don't exist anymore. I like the idea of an upright as they are a lot easier for finding stuff in.

We have a Frigidaire uprights only chosen in the basis that it was cheap. Be aware though that some models specifically say 'not for use in an unheated garage' - something to do with the ambient temperature. Having said that, ours is 'not suitable' but has been out there about 5 years with no problems yet (except for when the plumber accidentally turned it off).

Do you mean you are looking for a teeny chest freezer like this or that you would prefer one similar to my upright?.
Or do you want a more traditional chest freezer like this?

You could dehydrate your rhubarb, tomatoes and apples and it would take up far less space (and they'll last for years)

some chest freezers are actually designed for use in an unheated garage, and I remember reading in a brochure (pretty sure to have been Bosch or Siemens) that they channelled the waste heat to warm the outer casing to protect it from condensation.

You would have to look at the brochure or manufacturer's website though, I read it in passing but it was not relevant to me.

We are about to have a boiler and water tank put in the back of the garage which itself has a door onto the kitchen so it's not freezing but admittedly isn't warm (thinking about insulating the garage roof actually - another post about whether this is a diy job..)

MrsCakes I would prefer an upright like yours but I don't think it will be full so I thought a smaller chest one would be cheaper in the first place and more efficient. But I think I need to look at the energy ratings.

atti I have looked at dehydrators but I think I'd get more buy in from dh for getting a freezer than another kitchen appliance (she says looking guilty at the chopping machine I don't use gathering dust on the top shelf...)
