How to clean real wood floor

MilestoneMum · 14/07/2014 22:47

We are thinking of changing from laminate flooring to solid wood flooring in our kitchen, dining room and lounge, but I understand we can't mop it after hoovering as obviously wood and water aren't a good mix.

So how will I be able to get it looking clean? I'm not someone who cleans a lot but even I can't imagine not mopping a kitchen floor.

Sand it and seal it with Osmo (two or three coats) then wash it with a damp mop and Method wood cleaner.

Yep as long as it's properly sealed, mop using wood floor cleaner. I'd get as many protective coats on it as I could, and research the different types of sealant to make sure you get the best one for you. Think you can get oil or water based sealers, different ones have different benefits. pets and kids can be hard on wood floors and getting it sanded down and re-sealed is a bit of a pain.

We have a solid oak floor and sealed it with Osmo products, but we weren't too happy with the finish after a while. (I used Osmo products to clean it).

In the end we had it sanded and 3 coats of heavy duty matt varnish applied. It is brilliant. I mop it with a damp mop every few days and vacuum daily. It looks beautiful.

I have wooden floors.
I use a mop that is just damp with lukewarm water, don't use hot water.

You need just a touch of woodcleaner in the water.
For hoovering, make sure your hoover has the correct setting for hardwood floors, otherwise you might scratch it.
I have one of those brooms which has a fluffy microfibre head to pick up dust in between cleans.

If you have young children I'd stick with high-quality laminate.

We have solid wood in the hallway and dining room, three young dc's and its a bloody nightmare.
I've just given up and vac it and spray it with my vileda mop thingy everyday. I'm ruining it aren't I...

I sweep my living room wooden floor daily and then when it needs a clean use Method wood floor cleaner ( smells fab!) and a microfiber mop I got from Home Bargains for 3 quid!

People clean their floors daily????

(faints)

We also use Liquid Gold on our wood every few knights to bring out a shine. I clean the floor with a steam cleaner about weekly, vacuum most days.

I grew up with solid wood floors, in Denmark, where it's the norm. The feeling of real wood is just lush!

It depends on how the floor it treated, but a lime treatment is the best, as it is easy, not too expensive and doesn't change the wood. You clean it with soap flakes with a few drops of glycerin (prevents splinters) in hot water, you scrub it (I would get a hand scrubbing brush but one on a long hadle is fine too) with this and then wipe it down with a floor cloth, a few meters at a time. You do this maybe once a month, and just hoover/sweep weekly.

If the floor is laquered/varnished or painted, you can just mop it with a mild detergent (washing up liquid is fine).
