My trusty vacuum has given up the ghost. I have a dog, a toddler, and a baby on the way..... Any recommendations for what to look for next please.....?

Hello!

We've noticed this thread is quite old and some of the product recommendations are a little out of date. We've spent weeks speaking to parents and testing out vacuum cleaners, so here's the best vacuum cleaner 2018 as recommended by Mumsnetters.

Hope this helps! Flowers

"Which" says:

"We'd advise you to look elsewhere. Bissell vacs may be cheaper than some, but the ones we've tested have all been poor on dust pick-up on at least one floor surface."

Thanks PJ. I came on here for a final check before ordering as I could find few reviews of the vacuum cleaner on line (don't have access to Which)

I'll hang fire now and shop around Smile

Miele every time - I've had 2 of the cheap basic light ones, you can often pick them up for less than £100 in sales / offers, and they last forever and are absolutely fantastic! I have allergies so prefer the ones you can fit additional HEPA filters to (I think not all do)

Looks like I've got some price comparing to do! Haven't got one yet (have borrowed one - am not a total scruff!). It's good to have some feedback and things to look out for though. X

Very happy with a Miele, ours is a large, older one, with onboard tools storage under a lid. The newer ones are certainly lighter and smaller, it did not occur to me to look and see if they have the tools compartment. Spares (e.g. hose or heads) are easily available.

You can also get a very good Bosch at about £100, also a Which best buy.

The uprights are more complicated to build, and quite a bit more expensive than the cylinders.

Over the last 8 years, I've had a Dyson ball, a Henry ( still use for cleaning out the log burner) and now I've got a Miele cat and dog. Absolutely no doubt that the Miele is the best. I hate to say it because Henry is made in Britain and I like to support local manufacturing. Henrys are great for building work/ log burners etc. they are strong, sturdy, good suction and very simple so if anything goes wrong you can sort it yourself. They're virtually indestructible and the bags are cheap. They are very good but the suction and ability to clean up pet hair is much better on the Miele. And they are quite heavy to move around.

My dyson had to have a new motor after 12 months and 12 months later that one went too - couldn't cope with the fine dust from the fire and the dog hair. The dyson was the lightest and easiest to manoeuvre though, so it depends on what your needs are.

Overall, I would say that the Miele is best but the bags are expensive and fill up quickly. Henry is the most indestructible and best value for money and the Dyson ball is good for someone, like my grandma, that lives on her own, no pets, no log burner, but wants something very light and easy to push around.

Miele Cat and Dog.

AnnaFiveTowns · 29/07/2014 09:48

Oh and just to clarify, I have the Miele cat and dog cylinder which is fairly easy to push around and great on carpet and wooden flooring.

Miele, Miele, Miele!! It is amazing...

Ladies you need a G-Tech AirRam!
As sad as it is sot say this vacuum is tremendous and has changed how grotty our floors were. We had a vax and days on previously and were considering the Miele but the G-Tech is the SCHIZZLE!!

We have two big hairy dogs and a big house and a near constant open door of folk coming in and this machine of wonder eats it all up like it was nothing! And the best bit is that there are no bags or filters to buy and replace all the crap comes out in two bales and straight into the bin - job jobbed!

It's so light that stairs are a cinch and with no leads I can do the whole house in less time. Also the charge on this bad boy lasts ages. We have a mix of old carpet, deep pile carpet and bare floors and it does it ALL!

People might like to check local libraries for free access to 'which?' I know ours provides it!
I've been with a dyson for a decade and now I might follow this thread's advice and look out for a Miele !

SpringHeeledJack · 30/07/2014 22:04

oooh I'm going to throw a lint covered spanner in the works-

had a Miele cat and dog for a while but the thing made me weep- found it dreffle on carpets, head kept falling off (tho ok on the flat)

mind you it had belonged to my BF's ex, so maybe she put a hex on it

now have a Dyson animal- cylinder one. I love it. Tho not sure what it feels about me. Am guessing it rues the day it ever ended up in this shithouse (2 dogs who shed hair like needles, two hairy girls, gritty menz and a woodburner)
