Say what you will about Anthea Turner, but her tip on cleaning floor tiles grout is no fail 100% positive result.

Mix bicarbonate of soda with a little bit of water to make a paste, apply and rub gently with a cloth. the dirt and staining comes off straight away!! And it does not require major effort at all.

I did my kitchen floor last night, ran out of bicarbonate of soda and sent DH out to buy me some more so I could finish. Amazing. It is as good as new now. I am soooo happy now!

Get cleaning ladies!

Does it work on bathroom wall tiles too, do you know? I came on here especially to ask for tips for this so was pleased I found this thread! Only trouble is, no bicarb, might have to take a trip to Tesco's!

MrsApronstrings · 09/09/2006 16:11

loopylou0612 · 09/09/2006 16:12

I've spent all day out in the sunshine with dd, iota and am sooo behind with the household stuff! I'm not sad really! I don't have the bicarb stuff and have got too much to do to get to the shops so it'll have to wait anyway til another day!

loopylou0612 I haven't tried in on wall tiles (yet!) but I don't see why it wouldn't work there too. It is like a mild abrasive and it just gently rubs off all the dirt. our grout in the kitchen was really dirty, it looked even dirtier after I cleaned only half of the floor, you could really see the difference. It is also a mild deodoriser.
With the grout in teh shower, I find teh biggest problem to be mildew spots (black stuff) and I used to use a shop bought mildew remover which stinks to high heaven and contains loads of bleach. I would love to know of a less harmful way of cleaning those maildew marks. I've heard peroxide (?? don't know what it is) would work but the name suggests to me somethig chemical again.
Apparently Soda Crystals bring new life to grouting too. But I've never tried them. I think it comes in granules and a solution form as well.
Actually MrsApronstrings maybe you can test that and let us know, what with your bag full of soda and what not!

Happy grout cleaning tomorrow. Once you start you won't want to stop!

iota when i look at my kitchen floor my heart is full of sunshine!!! Couldn't get sadder than this if you tried!

Peroxide is bleach isn't it?

Branster · 09/09/2006 21:32

ilovecaboose you might be right. i know peroxide is used for bleachin hair. so it must be some sort of bleach then.

not sure about peroxide, but don't think it's too dreadful as I had a friend who was recommended buy her dentist to use it as a mouthwash! she used to buy it from the local chemists.

Does this work on black grout too? When we use soap to clean the floor it turns the grout white

sarahken · 02/04/2009 18:55

Fantastic! just used bicarb soda on my white grouting and applied it with a toothbrush and then wiped away. Floor looks brand new which is great as we have had it done less than a year and was looking very grubby. Took a bit of time to do every single tile, but definately worth it, and only cost 75p for the bicarb soda from Tesco, and only used a 1/3 of a tub. Thanks for the tip, where else can I use it?

Joe1977 · 02/04/2009 21:06

Thank you! I use bicarb soda solution for cleaning inside of fridge and freezer (it doesn't leave an odour) but hadn't thought of using it the grouting. Had to take a trip to the kitchen to check and the grouting does look pretty grubby, guess that's my weekend sorted out!!!
