Oh sh*t - Have just shrunk some curtains I think. Any hope for them??

We have a pair of fairly old curtains in the kids playroom which were left by the previous owners. We haven't replaced them yet cos they cover a whopping great french window, and we thought 'it's a playroom, so they'll probably get trashed anyway'.

In a fit of enthusiastic cleaning I decided to wash them today. Thought they were heavy cotton and could probably stand it, and just used a delicates 30C wash. But now I've taken them out, they're all wrinkled and I think they've shrunk slightly where there was a sort of woven pattern. I think the linings look longer than the hem -eek! - but it's hard to tell...

B*gg&r! WHy didn't I just fork out and get them dry-cleaned. Now I'll probably have to buy new curtains after all, and we can't really afford it.

Any ideas? Should I try to stretch them while they're still damp, or wait and try to steam iron them flat again?

Wonder if a dry cleaner would be able to restore them almost to normal?

Help!

sew a matching/contrasting hem on the bottom?

Can you not rehem the lining so it is shorter, or if the curtains remain too short for the windows find a complementary material anf add a band at the bottom to restore them to the correct length.

Tell the kids to hang on them, might stretch them back out ...I did this to my front room curtains and lowered the rail as i couldnt afford more.

Good idea about the hems...

I'm more worried about the fact they seem so, sort of ruchhed-up & crinkly, I just wonder if they'll ever go flat again.

DH (after laughing at me )said wait till they're dry and see what the damage is...

I hung mine up wet and let them dry out naturally. Looked ok after a few weeks.
