July 2014: fledglings follow Flylady's tuition (don't forget your pamper mission)

ToffeeWhirl · 30/06/2014 09:14

A big thank you to slackcabbage for superb thread leadership throughout June, as well as a great intro which I am going to shamelessly borrow from now.

Struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (can't have anyone over syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (something that undermines family fun)? In that case, you need Flylady.

Flylady is a system for managing housework. Starting with babysteps, it builds up into a routine which becomes second nature. In theory, once you are used to the system, you will have a tidy house you are not embarrassed by and plenty of time to get on with more interesting things.

Flylady banishes the panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. If you fall off the Flylady bandwagon, it’s no problem: you just jump back in where you are and carry on.

Don't sign up for the Flylady emails as you will be inundated! All the information you need will be linked here on this thread on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, Flylady's steps and routines will be listed here on this thread.

Flylady uses a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  1. start or repeat baby steps
  1. repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone
  1. reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

(And detailed deep cleaning in each zone for those who have made real progress – not sure if anyone has reached this pinnacle yet…? I certainly haven’t).

More info here on getting started (but ignore step one!) and Flying lessons. Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.

Try to ignore Flylady’s purple prose (hard, I know) - the underlying system is sound!

Three key points to keep in mind:

  1. No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine.
  1. You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  1. It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy overnight - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new, then trying to spend 15 mins decluttering and doing the babysteps is the most you should expect of yourself. Lots of us here like posting our ‘to do’ or ‘ta da’ lists and they can look quite scary. Don’t be put off.

If all else fails, try the power of three – just pick three things that most need doing and focus on those.

And if you have visitors coming over this afternoon and need a quick fix NOW, try Flylady's crisis clean.

We all know each other pretty well on this thread and some of us have been around for a long time, but all lurkers, oldies and newcomers are very welcome!

Hi everyone,

toffee and bitchy sounds like you've been having a tough time with your DC, hopefully things are improving.

nicknacks - hope your dentist was nice to you and hasn't put you off going back.

We're back from the family funeral, was a very tough few days, but DS was an angel which made it a lot easier. He slept through the entire church service, including three badly sung hymns.

Since we've got home I have:
Remade DSs bed
Sorted washing into piles
Got one wash on and next one lined up
Properly unpacked all our bags
Loaded dishwasher
Fed DS

To Do
Bath DS and put him to bed
Hoover lounge
Sort cat litter trays
Cook Dinner order takeaway
Watch last weeks episode of Hannibal

BlueEyeshadow · 26/07/2014 19:58

Well, today's been odd! Car completely conked out at the lights on the way into town - I was trying to do shopping on my own as quickly as possible! So got pushed round the corner by 2 passersby (Thanks to them, whoever they were), called the AA... By the time the AA guy arrived, the car was working perfectly. Left me doubting my own sanity, but he was very understanding! Blush

Did get shopping done, in the end.
Also got boys' hair cut (and washed this evening!!)
Visited friends and their baby
Been to garden centre
Done gardening

Sorry to hear about funeral, coffee

Well done on dentist, NickNacks

The shouting/loud music/party over the road went on till at least 2am last night, and I was woken up at 6.15 this morning. No wonder I'm tired! Visiting MIL tomorrow and tons to do, so really need a better night tonight! Not sure if Wine will help, but seems like a good idea!

Wow it's quiet on here this weekend, where are you all?

The dentist was ok thanks, she wasn't very chatty, just matter of fact about the work I will need done. Being referred to the hospital though so I'm hoping there'll knock me out. Grin

Manage to complete my modest to do list yesterday and made me realise I feel so much better than having a massive list I can't make a dent in.

So today,

Sort out under stair cupboard
Clear sitting room floor into said cupboard
Fill out Tc form (always the procrastinator!)
Another shower
Ds1 to friend's house
Massive three baskets of clean clothes away
Wash on

ToffeeWhirl · 27/07/2014 09:30

NickNacks - I think everyone is outside on the naughty corner terrace, enjoying the sunshine. Glad you will get sedation for your dental treatment next time round. I like your list today: 'sort out under stair cupboard; clear sitting room into said cupboard' Grin. That's my kind of list.

Woken up at 8.30 by DS2, so that's fair enough, but he then had a massive sulk because the rest of the household were still sleeping. He has managed to sustain the sulk and refused to talk to me and it made me so cross that I had to keep busy - so I have a 'ta da' list:

Cleaned kitchen windows
Did last night's washing up
Shined sink and taps
Cleaned kitchen cupboard doors
Wiped and tidied kitchen counters
Put bottles out for recycling

Then DH woke up and DS2 decided he would go and read in bed with him (hooked on the Harry Potter's), rather than stay and sulk with me. Phew.

DFriend is here all morning, then she's going home and DH is going into work, so I'm hoping to catch up on my OU work in the afternoon. Every time I finish an essay, I heave a sigh of relief and stop work - when, in fact, I'm meant to be reading up for the next essay. So I now have a lot of catching up to do.

I had an early night. Officially away as of later so will be very quiet for a week. I will have to see you all on the August thread. Ds is still a tad nervous but he is calmer now he know what to expect from his activities this week. Just the hotel bit to face later.

In the meantime this morning: finish last bits of washing, finish packing, and a hot deep bath for me. But as I should be on bed rest cos the pain and tiredness levels are that bad I shall be just gently pottering..

KiaOraOAotearoa · 27/07/2014 09:54

Sweaty bedding and yesterday's clothes in the wash here also! I never do a wash at the weekend, but yesterday's sweat NEEDED to be washed!!!!!

Ta da:
Did a load of washing
Washed after breakfast
Made myself a second cup of coffee
Bread on (read a fab recipe on here last nigh, parmesan and italian herbs and towards the end pop some grated cheese on top for a cheesy crust!)
Put £20 on the side.
Did a quick online shop for DD-she was fine in June, in July nothing fits her without digging! Johnny B is a richer man. The sales are still on.
Bullied DD into brushing the unexpected: her teeth and hair!

To do:
Shower and make up
Hang the washing
Make chocolate brownie
Iron some vests/tshirts
Find theatre appropriate attire
Check the diary for next week

We're going for a picnic the pm, for dinner we've got quiche and new potatoes.

Have a lovely Sunday one and all :)

BitchyVstheUFOs · 27/07/2014 13:33

Right we are about ready for the off. Have a lovely week and see you for our traditional thread birthday month although it has been proven that actually it is not the ACTUAL birthday month, but it does make a good month for a bit of a party

NickNacks · 27/07/2014 13:37

Have a great trip bitchy

ToffeeWhirl · 27/07/2014 13:41

Hope all goes well and that your DS copes with the changes.

Kia - all that food you mention is making me feel hungry

DFriend has gone home and the house is oddly quiet. I should start on my OU work now, but am feeling very sleepy and an afternoon nap appeals...

By the way, has anyone volunteered to run the August thread? I can't remember.

I want to make a lovely quiche tomorrow. Can the fledglings inspire me with any recipes?/flavour combinations?

CarpeJugulum · 27/07/2014 17:14

The salmon and asparagus one from the MNet cookbook is nice.

Alternatively my DMIL does a lovely cherry tomato & Parma ham one?

KiaOraOAotearoa · 27/07/2014 17:17

Oh, have you tried the higgidy quiches while you were in UK, Engels?
The pastry is very thin and has poppy seeds in, amazing! That's what we are having tonight, with new potatoes.
Toffee, just do 15 min at a time on your essay Grin

CallingAllEngels · 27/07/2014 18:25

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 27/07/2014 18:33

whew. dgs back home. It's been a particularly stressful 24 hours, and while I've gotten a few things done, I will start tomorrow with a renewed list of things to sort. My office stuff is top of the list. Then the dcs' bedrooms.

Still trying to fix the vacuum. Worried that it might have given up the ghost. Fingers crossed. It's going to require disassembly to sort it. Hmm

KiaOraOAotearoa · 27/07/2014 21:19

No idea what zone we are in next week but I hd a look at my underwear drawer and thiught:hmmmmm, time to declutter this one. So that's one of the tasks.
Make dentist appointment.

Engels, yes it is. It is amazing!

KiaOraOAotearoa · 27/07/2014 21:20

Aloce, what's wrong with your hoover?

KiaOraOAotearoa · 27/07/2014 21:20

*alice

ToffeeWhirl · 27/07/2014 21:48

Kia - just do 15 minutes at a time on your essay Grin - yes, I should! Ended up not doing any at all Blush.

Alice - sorry you've had a stressful 24 hours.

Blimey, Engels, you are doing a lot for a pregnant woman, especially one who says she's having a lazy Sunday. Take a break, please .

Tomorrow is Babystep Number 28: remember to eat good food, drink your water, and get your rest.

It's Monday tomorrow, so time for the weekly home bleugh.

This week we are in two zones: Zone 5 - the Living Room; and Zone 1 - the Entrance, Front Porch and Dining Room. We'll be in Zone 5 for the first four days. Tomorrow's mission is here: spend 15 minutes decluttering in your Living Room.

Flight plan is here.

Your weekly pampering mission is to make a date with a good friend.

Am now off to share a bread and butter pudding and custard with DH. I bought it to fatten up the DC, but neither of them want it and we can't let it go to waste, can we?

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 27/07/2014 22:44

Kia I think that something is caught on the brushes and holding it up. I believe a simple disassembly will allow me to clean it all up and check for that. Reasonably certain that's the problem. Just can't be arsed to do it tonight, as I'm tired. Grin

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 27/07/2014 22:45

oh, I'll point out that I did clean my carpet today though - went around with a hard hand brush and swept it that way. Not a great method for daily cleaning though. Hmm

BlueEyeshadow · 28/07/2014 08:59

KiaOraOAotearoa · 28/07/2014 09:39

Morning , thank you!
Changed the sheets yesterday, washed one lot, the other is washing as we speak.
Dusted yesterday (I was cheesed off with DH so kept busy and bit my tongue. Doesn't happen often, but MIL was there)
I need to vacuum and clean the mirrors.
I have no hidden clutter in the living room, I am the mother of all minimalists, there's Nothing in it.
As it happens I spent Saturday arranging dates with friends, so all well there.

Good....off for coffee with my friend now :)
