How can I get rid of tough soap scum??

I live in rented accommodation, the building was built ten years ago and I don't think my shower door has ever been cleaned since then (I've been here a year)
So I've tried white vinegar forgot to open bathro door and nearly made myself sick with the smell that didn't work
I've tried cif lemon - doesn't work
I've tried using the steamer on it - doesn't work
Not even cillit bang works and it burns my skin if I even get it on there for a few seconds so I know it's good stuff!

I've used a wire wool after each product and I've scrubbed so hard my arms ached

Help Sad

Best thing I've found for soap scum is vinegar and soda crystals scrubbed with a wire scourer and then finished off with a pound shop cheapy lime scale remover.

Took a while but brought my taps- which sound much like your shower door- up a treat.

Do you mix the soda crystals and vinegar together?
I've tried white vinegar but that hasn't even touched it

Is it soap scum or limescale? Maybe try a limescale remover like viakal if you haven't already.

Yes OP mix them into a paste. It smells noxious but works!

Coat the glass with a really good layer of liquid fabric softener. Leave it all day. Scrub it off with savouring pad. Works wonders.

If it is still not budging after everything you have glass cancer. Only way to fix it is to replace the glass.

You can hide the cloudiness by buffing the glass with sweet almond oil and a pair of tights. You do have to repeat this regularly.

You can get concentrated vinegar (acetic acid) - might be worth trying that ...(vinegar is about 8% acetic acid - you can buy various strengths of acetic acid - be careful it can burn skin, protect your eyes and the fumes aren't good for you either)
Cheapest and easiest would be to ask at your local chip shop - they might have some you can buy off them - 'concentrated non brewed condiment' (or similar name ) they dilute it down (usually 16:1) to make the vinegar for chips...
Wipe it on and leave it for as long as possible - maybe repeat a couple of times...
T make a pile of dry bicarb and dip in a damp cloth/scrubber - then use straight on glass - you could even add a bit of salt for extra scratchiness ......
Or if it really is that bad - and it is definitely glass and smooth (not patterned) or with anything painted on the scummy side - have you tried one of the window scraper things from B&Q - razor blades in holders for removing paint etc from windows? That might bring the worst off...

Well I'm off to the shop this morning to get some bits, I am determined to get this off
I don't think its limescale but I do have limescale remover so will give that a try today
I hope it's not glass cancer!
My bathroom stinks of vinegar this morning!

Someone else on here has successfully used a magic eraser on their shower screen. You could also use a stanley blade in a holder - which is what I think the pp is referring to - for scraping off stubborn muck. I use one for cleaning the inside of the glass oven door.

SunshineofRay · 30/06/2014 13:29

Well I've tried cillit bang and steaming again (because the cillit bang seems to work on everything else)
I tried a limescale remover and steamed and scrubbed after
Still no joy
I thought about the scraping, I'm pretty desperate at this point I will not let that bloody door defeat me
I've got a magic eraser somewhere so I'll give that a try aswell

With all the wire wool it's not now scratched is it?

The only other thing that springs to mind is sugar soap, which is easiest to find in DIY shops, but I don't rate its chances after everything else you've tried i'm afraid.

I clean my shower door with asda multi surface cleaner 88p, its amongst the polish etc, but can be used on glass, quick spray, leave for couple mins, then buff with a microfibre cloth- sparkling, no soap scum,, limescale and keeps water mark away for a while- found this by accident after trying all sorts of expensive cleaners/limescale removers etc!
