Garage Organisation!

It's a mess! Hundreds of tools & inherited bolts, nuts, screws etc, garden stuff, car stuff, spiders galore & the usual garage randomness that needs chucking/sorting out.
Thought about getting some ikea trofast?
Anyone out there got an organised, easy-to-find-stuff garage? Tell me about it. Or if you have any good organising ideas for me please share!

Have a look on Pinterest. Lots of ideas there. I also like a blog called IHeartOrganizing - she will have some stuff about garage organisation - I seem to remember seeing some - she covers her own stuff but also some others.

plastic shelving units down the sides

Lots of translucent crates, so you can see what's in them, and they can be stacked. The lids will keep future dirt out.

You can put screws and nails in small plastic pots (preferably sorted by size) with a squirt of WD40 and shake them.

A large bin so you can throw stuff straight in.

Anything you want to keep, wipe clean (if very dusty, have a bucket of warm water and WUL, and allow to dry, but generally wipe things with WD40 on a rag to reduce future rust.

Do an initial sort into your plastic crates, e.g. garden stuff, carwash stuff, decorating stuff.

Subsequently, you can look at each crate individually, and you will see that in the garden small tools crate, you have seven trowels, most of them bent, broken or rusty, and you can keep one and bin the others. You will also find that your have four bottles of weedkiller or screenwash, or three sets of spanners, and with all your spanners in one crate, you can wipe them clean and put them in sets.

A lot of stuff can be offered on freegle. I gave away several lawnmowers in the last year, and two cans of motor oil for vehicles I no longer have.

What nobody wants can go to the tip.

Our garage is 'organised' very roughly organised, but heaps better than it was before I got my hands on it into four sections.

We have a gardening shelf, DIY shelves, car stuff in our case that takes up fifty per cent of the room and toys.

I have a 'deal with tent things' rule. Each night after tea, or whenever, go in and deal with ten things. At first pick up ten things and ditch them. Or put them away.

Eventually you will have become absorbed in it and be well on your way to having sorted it all out. Or you will have at least sorted ten things!

I have an obsession with Really Useful Crates because they are extremely pleasing to the eye, are transparent, come in fancy colours if you want, and fit into and onto each other in a very matchy matchy fashion. Apart from that, I agree with PigletJohn as always. I leave things in the front garden clearly labelled "FREE" and they go.

MN has a discount offer with Rymans atm, so I clicked through from the email and ordered more Really Useful Crates. Heaven.

If you put things in the front garden marked "£25, please knock" they disappear even faster.

MrsRTea · 25/06/2014 00:02

Aw, I think it's sweet when people knock and say "Can I take it? Are you sure?" Look of delight on their little face. But I know what you mean. Grin

Thanks everyone for your helpful responses! Going to tackle it this weekend, using your tips & advice. Looking forward to having 'everything in its place' and not having to perform acrobatic manouvres to get over/to things. Health and safety would have a field day!
Ps pigletjohn WD40 tip.. Who knew?! (Or may be common knowledge to all but me?!)
