Best way to prevent moths…..

So - we haven't got them at the moment (thank God), but am terrified of the little blighters returning and feasting on my clothes. I spray a moth killer every now and then in the hope that it will nip any potential problem in the bud. Wonder what others rely on? Hate the smell, but can't help thinking that old school mothballs might be more powerful than a bit of lavender scented paper/wood. Any advice?

You can get wardrobe hangers that contain Transfluthrin and emit a tiny amount if vapour over several months. It kills moths, grubs and eggs.

They have been designed to emit very little vapour, it accumulates inside closed containers such as wardrobes, drawers and boxes. It breaks down in sunlight or rain and disperses in air, so that the air you breathe in the house is pretty well free of it. I get mine from Robert Dyas. There are a few brands such as Bouchard, Zero-in and Rentokill which contain the same chemical, it works and does not smell.

You also need to hoover a lot, especially inside, under and behind furniture, and around edges of carpets where they like to climb under the gap.

You can get lavender and cedar scented products. The scent dies not kill moths but will make your holey clothes smell nice when you throw them in the bin.

If you have any infested or second-hand fabrics, put them through the tumbke drier as the heat will kill grubs and eggs.

For storage, put clothes in plastic crates with a lid and put a Transfluthrin cartridgd in each crate.

If you have old clothes, carpets or hessian lagging in the loft, tie it into binbags and throw out. Hoover well afterwards.
