to run the dishwasher at home before we left(gone for 2 weeks) so there's mould crawling out the top of it and when you open it, the stench nearly knocks you out...

that's if you've actually finished retching from opening the suitcase where all the puke ridden clothes and pee ridden bed sheets are

so I've shoved it all in the kitchen and closed the door hoping that the cleaning fairy will sort it all out while I sleep tonight!!

any good tips for dishwasher cleaning stuff you know about?

maybe cleaning fairy WILL come, lol. hope so!

foxinsocks · 03/09/2006 20:47

we really are a very smelly lot - am convinced you can smell it from outside the house

Oh you poor thing FIS. I dread mass leakage of children on non washing-machine holidays
I think the cleaning fairy you need is your eejit of a dh.
Or else the batters method which is to order a new dishwasher (admittedly hers was broken as well as crawling) and get the lucky delivery guy to take the old one away...

Marina · 03/09/2006 20:48

Dh and ds have come home slightly whiffy from a two day camping trip...

ja9 · 03/09/2006 20:48

oh you poor poor thing!

foxinsocks · 03/09/2006 20:51

actually I hadn't considered that (a new dishwasher) - not a bad idea actually (if only I had a couple of hundred quid to spare). That's definitely the sort of solution dh would suggest!

I've run it twice now and it still smells. Am wondering if I shove something like vinegar in (or bleach or something equally environmentally harmful), it might work but not sure if you can put stuff like that in the dishwasher.

poo you stink

Marina · 03/09/2006 20:52

Vinegar will do it.

foxinsocks · 03/09/2006 20:54

does it have to be a specific type of vinegar (honestly, am so crap with household stuff)?

I have some white wine vinegar and some malt stuff like in the chip shop.

stinky pants stinky pants

ah foxinsocks we got back at 2.30 am. You have made me feel better about the fact that there is a load of wet washing in the utility room, some washing in the machine and, I calculate, about 6 loads on the dining room floor, bearing in mind that I have already done 3 loadds today. So that is your good deed for the day. I made the children have cereal bars and little pots of dry cereal in the car to alleviate the need to run the dishwasher before we went.

foxinsocks · 03/09/2006 20:57

lol - glad I make you feel better. Yes, my biggest mistake was leaving dh to run the dishwasher. Clearly I should have done that (along with packing, booking the holiday, sorting out the kids etc. etc.)!

I do have stinky pants cod. Can't tell you how pleased I was to see I had left some clean underwear behind.

Hello, hope this helps but my dishwasher was broken for weeks and when I had it fixed it was REVOLTING inside. My repairman suggested running it through with a bowl of milton liquid inside on a normal wash. It worked for me. got rid of the smell and mould.
Beware though as the chlorine smell is very strong. You may want to do it when you are out as it made me feel a bit whoosy, even with windows open.

Bozza · 03/09/2006 21:04

Well my DH omitted to flush the toilet (wee only fortunately) before we went if that helps. We set off early and he must have done a wee in the night and not flushed and then used one of the other toilets subsequently. So you see I should have gone around flushing toilets - actually thought I had because DS is an unreliable flusher but omitted to check the en-suite.

You can get little bottles of cleaning stuff for dishwashers, or

Kim n Aggie suggest this ...

"Run a cup of white vinegar through the entire cycle of the dishwasher when empty. It will remove all the grease and soap scum and leave it sparkling clean and fresh.

For sparkling clean dishes and a lovely fragrance, run the cycle with half a lemon on the top rack. Ooh ... lovely"

morningpaper · 03/09/2006 21:25

My mother moved house, put her stuff into storage for six months - when she finally moved her microwave into her new house, she realised that it contained a whole chicken that she had been defrosting six months ago.

at the memory

LIZS · 03/09/2006 21:28

bleurgh . Our dishwasher was rank after just a few days when we had a weekend away. You can get bottles of Finish d/w cleaner which you turn upside down in the cutlery rack and run it empty on the hottest cycle.

foxinsocks · 03/09/2006 21:43

thanks for the tips - will look for dishwash stuff otherwise will try some vinegar (haven't got any milton unfortunately but if I can't find the dishwash stuff will look for this!)

lol at the chicken in the microwave - your poor mum! Think I would definitely have chucked the whole thing away
