Help! Sand in dishwasher. What should I do?

Thanks to various MN threads I got bold and put all the manky plastic tools from the kids' water/sand table in my dishwasher.

They didn't melt, came out pretty clean. BUT I clearly didn't rinse them enough first, because the top rack now scratches and scrapes as it goes in and out.

Googling just keeps providing solutions to the sand-like deposits you sometimes find after running the dishwasher.

I've cleaned the filters twice & run it in between. I've removed both racks and rinsed/scrubbed under and around the wheels.i've poured water all around the rails as I slide them in and out. I'm going to have to find out how to take the rails off, aren't I?

Any dishwasher experts out there with better suggestions. And should I rinse, oil, or what?

Thankyou!

PS It's quite ironic because I hate sand and avoid beach play whenever possible!

I am very concerned that the abrasive sand may damage moving parts of your dishwasher, especially the pump and valves.

You can try putting a large pan, right-way-up, in the machine so that sand collects in the bottom.

Take the arms out and clean them in the sink. If you have lost the instructions, download them from the makers website. The model and serial no may be engraved on the top edge of the door.

Oil will not help. You have to wash out the sand.
