Solved? Small holes in front of tops/ t-shirts

I have been going crazy about this for months, I have around 6-8 quite expensive new t-shirts/ jersey tops (all 100% cotton) and they have ALL got the tell-tale holes but none of the explanations offered on various forums seemed to fit; I mainly travel by train so seat belt seems unlikely, I started washing them alone on a delicate cycle with delicate detergent and in those net laundry bags, so catching on the machine or on zips seems wrong, I rarely clean with chemicals as I have a cleaner and I certainly haven't done so in all the tops, I have no signs of moths in the house, don't tug and pull the front and don't have any rough edges on my worktops etc etc. So what could it be?!?!?!?! I had reached the point where I was scared to buy tops because I knew this would ruin them!!!
Today I was puzzling over it once again and decided to look at a t-shirt I have worn and which doesn't YET have the holes, here's what I found. Small silvery residue on inside exactly around the culprit bottom front area (see picture 1), and though no visible holes, when held up to the light, small 'weak' looking spots around the same area as the residue (see 2nd picture, a little hard to see here and more noticeable in reality, but they are the small vertical lines around the centre and are not visible on the 'safe' areas to the edges where there are no silver marks). I thought - those weak spots are just waiting to become holes when I next wash this; and the silvery residue - I thought it could only be from the top button on my jeans, so I rubbed the button on the inside hem of the sleeve and hey presto - the same marks!! So looks like the jeans button bangs/ rubs on the top, leaves the residue and makes it weak, and then the washing machine opens up the hole!! I am assuming at this stage it is a physical rather than chemical reaction. I'm going to try handwashing it very gently in water only and see the results, then machine washing it on delicate on its own in a laundry bag without detergent, then with detergent! If and when the holes come, hopefully the mystery's finally solved!! Obviously when people say they occasionally get the same holes on other parts of clothes too, this weakening could be caused by any small trauma to the fabric, it's just that the jeans button is a very common one, hence why this area is always mentioned as the main problem on various threads/ forums etc.

Ahh, I've been trying to find the cause of those little holes for years - I do think you might have solved the mystery!

EduardoBarcelona · 18/05/2014 13:34

thank god for that Wink

Last year I had small holes appear on both my clothes and DS clothes, but in different places. I had a new washing machine so felt it was likely related to that. Following 2 visits from engineers it was decided that my machine's water saving programmes were causing the clothes to bounce on the drum, cause the weakening you describe so well in your OP, and that would lead to holes. Solution - use water top up. I explained politely many times that I had bought the machine partly for its water saving features. So I feel that the £700 I spent on my lifetime lasting Miele was poor value for money. Just an alternative explanation for holes in clothes.

sarahl1 · 18/05/2014 14:15

I think it's basically any small trauma which can cause the weakness, a good whirl around in water/ detergent then opens up the weak point, I just think that jeans buttons are probably the most common cause of trauma but yes there could be many more explanations... in future when wearing long tops I'm going to try covering my jeans button with a small piece of fabric like a piece of microfibre from a glasses cloth ('cos it won't fray and it is soft and sort of cushioned) and then pushing it through the button hole to hold in place, hopefully this will stop the original trauma and hence the holes!! I'll report back...

OP - do you think you are a little obsessed about this? Grin

alemci · 18/05/2014 16:05

I think the cottons being used are not as good quality either. I never used to experience this until the last 3 years'.

this is also the situation with bobbling on jumpers. it shouldn't be so stressy to wash things.

wombat22 · 18/05/2014 16:15

Mine have been caused by the prong that goes into the holes on my belts. I bought a different style of belt and problem solved Wink

SilveryMoon · 18/05/2014 16:27

I have this too, and now that I think about it, it is only on the tops I wear with jeans!

sarahl1 · 18/05/2014 17:06

You bet I'm obsessed - about £1000 worth of favourite tops ruined!! Sad

I have had loads of clothes ruined too but found it to be new machines using less water and causing more friction to your clothes. Also the wholes inside the washing machine drum having a sharp edge to catch on clothes.

tiredandsadmum · 19/05/2014 01:10

Napkin - this is my experience, but Miele wont have it. Bang on about how fantastic their honeycomb drum is, yet I have holes in my clothes. Gritted teeth.

napkin · 19/05/2014 12:03

I went through a number of machines that done the same thing. New machines are just not as good anymore. I wash any decent stuff in laundry bags now. So much money to waist on a Miele machine tired! It gets you down seeeing all your clothes getting ruined and not wanting to spend money on more clothes just to get ruined too. Angry

HopeClearwater · 19/05/2014 13:40

£1000 on 6-8 new tops - where do you shop?

snugglesnook · 19/05/2014 13:41

This is a good theory!

gamerchick · 19/05/2014 14:07

But you always fasten up anything with buttons and a zip and turn them inside out before washing so nothing catches. Especially stuff like jeans. Does not everybody do that? Also jeans are washed on their own on a cool wash with little soap so they don't fade.

Or maybe I'm anal about washing Grin

napkin · 19/05/2014 15:59

I wash everything inside out, zips and buttons done up, always have done and still have holes.

mistymeanour · 19/05/2014 16:11

I think its not just the button on the jeans but the hardness of the material on the waistband to the left of the button where it closes that can rub and undermine the fabric of tops as well. I stopped wearing jeans and wore chinos instead and I still got the holes. I have been quite ill the past few months and have mainly been wearing yoga pants with stretchy waistbands - and guess what? finally no holes in my new tops!

minipie · 19/05/2014 16:21

gamer the jeans button does the damage when you are wearing the top, not when washing the jeans.

Good theory OP. I think this must be it. We need jeans companies to start making fabric covered buttons.

have4goneinsane · 20/05/2014 11:18

I've had the same problem with jeans rubbing holes in tops. Definitely worse when we had a Miele honeycomb machine, not as bad now with my supposedly rougher top-loader (but I do still get some). Definitely thinner fabric is more susceptible.

KristinaM · 20/05/2014 11:35

This sounds plausible to me as I never wear tight tops with jeans and I never get these holes.

SwedishEdith · 20/05/2014 11:55

I noticed recently that I don't get them anymore The only thing that's changed is getting rid of granite worktop And switching from Gap jeans to Uniqlo - no nylon threads sticking out

napkin · 20/05/2014 22:33

It's not the jeans thing for me as even get them in duvet covers that are washed alone. Can understand this could be the cause for some though.

gibberingidiot · 16/10/2015 14:47

I reckon it's the jeans button... I only wore the tee shirt once, don't have granite work surfaces, didn't drive etc etc etc yet today I have holes. It's not my belt but I do recognise those marks left by the jeans button so in the absence of any better suggestions I'll go with this. Ha.. I even checked my glasses (using the tee shirt hem to clean them) but no.... And these are not cheap tee shirts!!

Tostartagain · 16/10/2015 20:29

I have just bought a Miele and as others that own one have said, I am getting holes in my clothes. Trying to get a refund by it is proving difficult!

OverScentedFanjo · 16/10/2015 20:47

ZOMBIE THREAD.

But holes in tees bothers me.

Now it's in my pants so who knows.
