We're getting a skip!

Has anyone in the history of man ever been as excited as I am about something so dull.

I really can't wait, we're going to have a proper clear out. Old furniture, bikes, toys and other shite we come across will all get tossed out without a backwards glance. And then the plan is to stay on top of it all. We have quite a small house and I childmind so we have soooo much stuff that it's ridiculous and out of hand.

Any tips?

Yes, agree with other poster that other people will try to use it, especially if on main road.

If possible, have the bulk of the stuff ready, so that when the skip is there, you can just start filling it straight away.

You will love the skip, I recently used one and got rid of quite a bit.

I would say have as much ready as possible to chuck in it when it arrives. We got ours filled by a load of other peoples shite so there wasn't much room left for our stuff!

We get a skip once every 4 or 5 years - it is so cathartic. But yes - be good to go when the skip arrives. The time to sort out what needs chucking is before, not after, the skip arrives. We had someone else's bloody sofa put in ours once - I was livid.

I can't believe the bare faced cheek of some people! Will definitely tell dh to get everything ready to go straight in the skip.

I can see how this mig become addictive! I'm so excited.

My dad had skip some years ago to chuck out 30 years of hoarded wood, nails, garden netting old paint etc.

nobody put stuff in his skip but plenty of his neighbours asked if they could take stuff out

My brother and I hired a skip when clearing the family house. While we were filling it a local man who seems to collect "stuff" to repair came past and had a load of stuff, then some scrap dealers arrived and finally I mentioned to a friend that there was loads of wood and her Dad came round to get some for his log burner. By this point it was almost empty and we could start filling it again!!

Oh there's a positive to nosy neighbours too then. Would love people to help themselves and empy the skip, how lovely.

We used to live on a small council owned estate, I can't tell you how excited I was on 'skip saturday' !!!

(one day a year the council would place two skips on the estate and every house could throw all their crap away)

I once visited my sister and her husband, when I went in the house I said 'have you seen that skip in the car park?.....'

My sister said 'nooooooooooo......'

......cue the back door swinging shut behind her husband who loves a bit of skip surfing.

He came back with two lovely ironwork chairs Grin

I can't believe that anyone would want our old flat pack shite except for firewood but if they do then they are more than welcome to it.

Does any have any advice about what size skip to get?

Get a 7 or 8 cubic yard it a typical big builders skip. We have had 8 of them this year clearing out our house. We need another one..

I get them delivered very early and make sure there is a space outside the house is reserved if it is on the road. Then fill it as fast a possible. Pack it neatly and fill the gaps to maximise load. Fill to about 30 com above the walls of the skip but don't overload. If you have boards, old doors, sheets of plywood or even thick cardboard arrange them around the walls of skip to maximise space. Put crushable soft things in bottom. and heavy stuff on top. Walk over load squashing it as you go. Squeeze small stuff into gaps.

Then I arrange with skip company to have it taken away at 5.00 pm so not left overnight. Stops people coming along dumping stuff.

Its hard work loading a skip. Get everything ready. Wear gloves and work as a team with one other person. If you have more than tow people one needs to stand in skip arranging the load.
