How the chuff does one get a mop dry?

I don't mop often enough, and part of the reason for that is the wretched mop.

I have tried several, and the one I like best for cleaning is an old fashioned style with a head that looks like it's made of string - do you know the ones?

But it takes forever to dry. It's been hung up under cover outside for 24h and is still sopping.

I've tried the butterfly ones and I didn't get on with those either - a worse clean and scarcely shorter drying time.

Unfortunately I've always found that the string-head ones are a bastard to dry. I prefer the (often more expensive) fabric-strip head ones, which I just rinse out with hot water then leave on top of the drainer bit of the mop bucket, so that air can get to it from all sides. I think mine is a Vileda.

is the 'hairy' part removable? if yes rinse+spin in the washer and then hand it up in the sun to kill the smell.

I have a square one wih removable heads. I just rinse+spin after use and then they go outside if it's dry or over the bucket indoors before they are dry enough to go back on the hook behind the stairs.

something like this

Get a steam mop. Problem solved

RuthlessBaggage · 19/04/2014 13:45

Ok thanks. I'm loath to give up a mop that works but I'm swearing at it yet again today!

I'll have a look to see if the head comes off - might need a screwdriver...

Can't use a steam mop on our hardwood floors because of how they're sealed. Believe me, I checked!

We had one of those at work and just used to leave it in the mop bucket after use so it could drip dry. Seemed to work well enough?

We have one of the ones with a removeable cloth thing on the end which just goes in the washing machine, it's really easy, I like it better than any other mop I've had.

I have a hook in the understairs cupboard so mop on hook with the wet end in the bucket but suspended, if you follow me. Catches the drips but gets the air to it too.

I have a stringy mop. I just give it a good rinse out and leave upside down over the mop bucket to air dry. It never becomes properly dry, but as long as it doesn't smell, I don't worry about it. If it's sunny outside, I leave it in the sun for a while.

Just replace it every month. They're cheap enough to buy.

RuthlessBaggage · 19/04/2014 18:04

Every month? That sounds a bit wasteful - I daresay you mop a lot more often than I do! Blush How many moppings is that, and I'll scale up.

Are those stringy mops honestly better than Vileda Supermops? My VS has a hook on the end and I hang it on the washing line to dry.

hiddenhome · 19/04/2014 18:18

I found the Vileda stringy mops didn't 'grip' the little crumbs and things like the stringy ones do. The Vileda one just flicked them around the kitchen.

I have engineered wood floors and tiles in the bathroom so I do quite a bit of mopping Grin

You can soak the mop in bleach and that should kill any smelliness. The washing machine would probably do it too on a hot wash.

tobybox · 19/04/2014 18:48

I sweep up crumbs first with a dustpan and brush, otherwise DPs pubes would forever cling to the mop. sorry to lower the tone. mopping gets rid of everything else!

RuthlessBaggage · 19/04/2014 18:53

I sweep very often. It's all downstairs and we have a strict "clothes on before you go downstairs" rule, so pubes are an upstairs (and therefore hoover) issue. How do men shed them so copiously?

As discussed, mophead does not detach so can't go in the washing machine, but a new one is probably warranted, so I'll look out for detachable string ones as a reasonable compromise.
