Clothes with sweat smells

Some of my DH clothes do not seem to wash properly. They reek of sweat and no matter how often I wash them, the smell stays. His sports wear seems to be affected the most but sometimes his cotton undershirts also get the same fate. I wash at 40C as higher might shrink the synthetic fabrics. Any ideas how I can effectively wash the smell off? Thanks a bunch!!

We had this problem too! Bought a sports wash called Halo from online shop wiggle, washed sports clothes in this and it really helped. Have also used it on his cotton workshirts. Also line drying on a windy day whenever possible. Hope this helps you!

Bio powder might help and hang them to dry in the sunshine.

White vinegar will shift the smell.

Thanks very much for the tips! Exactly what I was looking for. Now I have a chance of saving DH clothes :-)

What do you do with the white vinegar? Please.

Ledkr · 14/04/2014 09:25

Biological washing liquid pours onto the sweaty areas and leave on for a bit before washing.

Vodka

Dip the armpits in vodka then machine wash as normal

I keep a very cheap bottle my friend brought back ftom holiday in the cupboard with the washing powder

Using white vinegar - just slosh or spray it on to the armpits or smelly area of your choice, leave for an hour then wash as normal. I saved two lovely jumpers that I had written off this way after the arm pits stank of deodorant/sweat.

Tis nothing short of a miracle.

I always wash my DH's running/gym gear at 60 degrees. It does all have wash at 40 degrees on the labels but any lower then 60 and the smell does not come out. Every single thing has washed fine, no shrinkage yet. Smile

Second what sweetpeas said - Halo sports wash is really good. I buy it in supermarkets. Tesco also do their own version which is cheaper and I've found to work very well too.

You need something which will kill the bacteria causing the smells. Anything cooler than a boilwash can't do this without a bit of help!

I now add white vinegar to the wash or lavender dettol, or Zoflora to disinfect.
I read a wash above 40 reduces how effective bio powder is.

tibni · 14/04/2014 20:02

I used halo too on nylon skating gear. Really good. I got it on sainsbury.

I add a cap or 2 of zoflora to the fabric softener dispenser bit of the machine when washing smelly gym/football kit. I wash at 40 with bio powder too
