Bathroom smelling fusty

The bathroom is only a year old, so no leaking bits or worn out plumbing anomalies.

It always seems to smell damp and fusty. It's cleaned regularly, towels changed all the time and the toilet kept clean. The floor is tiled and also cleaned regularly. I keep it as dry as I can, but with four people using it, I suppose it's difficult sometimes. There is an extractor fan and both windows are always open, even when it's cold.

I can't understand it. I do notice when I clean the bath/shower/shower screen that it smells sort of unpleasant and there's that pink goo stuck in the odd corner. Could it be that? What would defeat it?

Any recommendations for particular cleaning products? I'm currently using Cif bathroom, Sainsburys bleach spray cleaner and, very recently, zoflora to try and help it smell nice.

I don't like chemically air fresheners as they set my sinuses off and I don't like the smells.

if it is very well ventilated (no condensation or black mould) then maybe the waste trap under the bath or shower is leaking. There may be damp under the floor covering, or behind the bath panel.

Or maybe, if the WC is not connected to a soil pipe that rises up to roof level, you may have a Durgo or similar air admittance valve, these usually jam and leak sewer smells into the house.

If the extractor fan actually works, you should not need two windows constantly open

The pink goo is a bacteria called Serratia marcescens. Bleach it.

It's not really a sewer smell, just a fusty sort of smell Confused

fusty smell could well be persistent damp spot, e.g. under a leak. Might even be a radiator leak.

Do you recognise the smell of damp plaster, wood or brick?

lol, it's okay, I've found the source. I was examining behind the bath panel when I noticed that the smell was worse then I was kneeling down. I followed the smell and it was coming from the plastic seal at the bottom of the glass shower screen.

It slides off, so I've removed it and it has black stuff in and smells unpleasant. It's currently in the bath soaking in bleach. I hope this cleans it.

I've sprayed the bleach spray everywhere I found the pink stuff.
