Carpet cleaner

Any recommendations?
Cream lounge carpet is ruined with various stains, made worse by ds having a vomiting bug last week that went everywhere.
I wondered whether it would be worth buying a carpet cleaner instead of hiring one.
I would like it to deep clean the lounge carpet, probably use on stairs and bedrooms too but also for the occasional spot cleaning if that's possible?
I saw one on groupon a few weeks back but the reviews all said great for spot cleaning but not so good for cleaning large areas so not sure if its one or the other?
Would love to replace the lounge carpet but budget will not allow just now, and I'm sure ds 10months will ruin it more yet

This thread is quite old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for product recommendations, we’ve recently updated our guide to the best carpet cleaners with lots of options, as tried and tested by Mumsnet users and editors. We hope you find it useful. Flowers

Once a stain gets to the carpet I clean it immediately with a sponge and detergent/ liquid soap, or carpet cleaner. I add the detergent or liquid soap for dishes with water and it does the job. You could also use steam mop. Hope it helps

No idea but I'm interested too. I'm thinking about hiring a Rug Doctor for the weekend, never done it before. The carpet cleaning people round here charge around £45 per room.

I've got a vax carpet cleaner which is good at cleaning carpets but not so good for spot stains.
I bought it as my old house had cream carpets throughout and it did keep them clean (used about twice a year) and was a reasonable price (around £100).
you could hire a professional machine to get the carpets really clean and then use a domestic one every so often to keep on top of them.

I've used the rug doctor a few times and it's good but expensive by the time you buy the shampoo etc.
