cleaning delicate silver

Hello... my husband bought me some lovely earrings with little cupped flowers on them. They've started to get little Black spots on them. I can't rub them with a cloth as too fragile. I've tried tin foil, hot water and salt. Does anyone have any other ideasGrin

Try Silver Foam.
You may need to get from a jewellers or on line.

for earrings and other small jewellery, Goddards also do "silver dip" in a glass jar. It chemically removes tarnish. Jewellers and John Lewis have it, you may find it at Waitrose.

It gets them very white, but does not burnish them in the same way that polishing with silver foam does. However I rather think they will be too small to polish. You could try using a small (bristle) paintbrush.

Silver foam also leaves a tarnish-resistant film on the surface.

I need some of that, I have a stack of silver earrings awaiting a good clean.

Something that stops them tarnishing instantly would be great.

Anyone know where stocks silver foam?

Jewellers and John Lewis have it, you may find it at Waitrose.

JL is a bit of a trip (50 miles)
So, I'll have to brave getting DH to look in Waitrose. He passes one on his commute. Trouble is you send DH into a supermarket and calories fall into his trolley.

Waitrose's are rather pricy calories Grin

Take them to a jewellers and they can put them in the ultrasonic machine.

Gets it squeaky clean and there's no friction involved so chance of damage

Oh thank you...I hadn't thought there would be a foam version of polish. I normally use one of the impregnated cloths but no way could I rub the flowers or it would bend the stalks. Many thanksThanks

Ultrasonic cleaners are fab. I worked in a lab with one. We often slipped rings and metal watch bracelets in it. It's frightening how much gunk is in a watch strap.

mrscumberbatch · 11/04/2014 19:41

Nocomet it's utterly disgusting isn't it Grin

Half the time the polish/dip just adds to the gunk behind stones/claws of rings etc.

Easiest just to drop it in-go for lunch and pick it up afterwards!

my foam arrived this morning and it worked perfectly. Thanks all .. I would have never heard of this otherwise I'm sure!

Would an independant jewellers sell the foam? Do I just ask for silver foam or is it only that particular brand that makes it?

I have a few delicate silver pieces I'd like to polish up.

PigletJohn · 15/04/2014 00:16

the foam is most often used for silver teapots, vases, picture frames etc. A soft brush and warm water are useful for getting residue out of engraving or patterns. It is quite widely sold and you may find it in the cleaning and polishing section of your supermarket, or many jewellers will have it. It is a pink soapy material.

Goddards is the main brand, JL sell it as an own-brand. There might be others. Most ordinary metal polishes are abrasive, but the foam works chemically to lift off the tarnish, so is better for silver. You don't have to rub hard and wear it away.

PigletJohn · 15/04/2014 00:20

p.s.

although us old lags call it silver foam, it seems Goddards now label it silver pad

I think it is the same pink soapy stuff, but unless you have a great many silver teapots, a tub will last for years and years.

Coumarin · 15/04/2014 02:27

That's great PigletJohn Thank you. Smile
