Ants!

Ugh! There are ants in our kitchen and I can't figure out where they came from and how to get rid of the little fuckers.

Our house is fairly new so no holes in the walls or anything like that. I thought maybe they got in from the drain so I put ant powder outside and bleached the whole kitchen within an inch of its life but there are still ants!

Has anyone got any advice? I don't have pets in case that's an issue with some ant killer stuff, but I am pregnant so am worried about using anything too toxic. I do keep the place clean, bins are emptied daily and I don't leave food out or anything so I'm at a loss!

I our old house they used to come in through the airbricks and then through gaps and cracks. I used ant powder all along the outside of the house and especially around the cracks and that did the trick without having to use powder in the house.

Foxsticks · 05/04/2014 11:39

Sorry, especially around tge air vents/bricks.

SavoyCabbage · 05/04/2014 11:42

Can you follow the trail?

Wishfulmakeupping · 05/04/2014 11:52

We moved into house in nov and there was ants (yes in nov!) we had the council spray the inside and outside of house think it was about £50 and that cleared them up quite quickly. I'm really hoping they won't come back this year but I am expecting they will I bloody hate ants :(

dobedobedo · 05/04/2014 11:58

I can't find a trail. They just randomly stagger about like they're drunk. I have put ant powder around the outside of the house but I'm still finding them.

Can you see a nest outside? Look for tiny mounds of earth/grit between paving slabs etc. a kettle full of boiling water down any mounds works wonders, keep doing it until they move to another garden!

Foxsticks · 05/04/2014 12:00

You could try putting some crumbs down and watch where they take the food?

BetterWithCheese · 05/04/2014 12:09

We moved house in September and it has got to be the most insect-ridden house ever! I have had ants in both our front and back rooms over the past two weeks. They seem to be coming in under the skirting boards so have poured ant granules in the cracks. It's the kind that they are supposed to take back to their nests. I did the back room mid week and not seen an ant there since. Only discovered them in the front room yesterday and put down the granules and there are no ants wandering about today - there were around 50 yesterday. Really hoping this does the trick. I'm really starting to hate this house :-(

wightjellybaby · 05/04/2014 12:11

Try and take them outside if you squash them more come as 'back up' as they give off a scent to attract 'help' this is for when the nest it under attack and all the warrior ones come out

Id put a ring of powder round the outside of your house and extra at the doors and any air bricks and cracks maby on window ledges too and on anything that looks like a nest outside but if its clean inside and theres no food for them theyll probably just go

wightjellybaby · 05/04/2014 12:13

If you want to feed and follow them as fox said sugar works well

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 05/04/2014 12:17

I use bait stations (we get ants every year - found bait stations in DIY store last year) and they make a huge difference, I have one indoors and one outdoors, the ants get the poison on them and them take it back to the nest themselves and it kills the nest (apparently).

PigletJohn · 06/04/2014 01:00

Nippon Liquid (gel) in a miniature toothpaste tube is the best stuff. Put a few drops on clean 2p pieces (so it does not soak in) distributed around the kitchen and the walls outside. If you have pets who are ant-like, put it under and behind kitchen units and appliances, out of sight. Do not disturb them when they feed on it. Replenish daily and after rain or cleaning. They will be gone in days.

They are probably eating petfood or spilled sugary drinks off the floor.

gamerchick · 06/04/2014 01:03

They're scouts don't worry.

Go to b&q and buy ant stations.. break off the tabs and put 2 or 3 to a room.

ThingsThatGoBumpInTheNight · 06/04/2014 01:09

Ditto bait stations

We had flying ants move in on the same day dd came home grr
The mw came out god knows what she thought as the bloody things were everywhere Confused

Good luck!

dobedobedo · 06/04/2014 08:35
