how can I stop it?? I clean it off everytime I go to the toilet as have a 2yr old[and 29yrold dh] whose aims are not very good. So what can I do.

Same problem here, nemo - no 2-yr-old but 3 males all with poor aim apparently - I bought an expensive wooden seat (well £40, expensive to me!) and although it has fantastic quality fixings which never get wobbly they have gone green/rusty just like the cheap ones.

I am resigned to changing the seat about once a year! Are there any with plastic fixings?

Molesworth · 20/08/2006 11:35

Toilet seats are bacteria hotels - I've got rid of mine!

waterfalls · 20/08/2006 11:35

Bleach will turn them green

Chandra · 20/08/2006 11:38

Somebody mentioned here, long time ago, that the green was not caused by bad "aiming" but that it was a chemical reaction initiated by something else, so.... although I can't remember what else she said and suggested just thought of clearing of guilt the men of your house

Chandra · 20/08/2006 11:38

there!

UrsulatheSeawitch · 20/08/2006 11:47

Um - that's only half true, Chandra - what causes it is uric acid, and guess where that comes from?

ComeOVeneer · 20/08/2006 11:51

What do you sit on then Molesworth? If you do get one with plastic fixings make sure the screw part is metal (plastic ones don't last 5 minutes).

Nemo1977 · 20/08/2006 11:56

I have been replacing ours every 6mths or so but there must be a way to keep it clean. I am paying out £30 at a time for something that is essentially not broken but just green so looks disgusting.

i've had to replace two loo seats in two years because of this, it rots the metal and they eventually snap! the plastic ones were the best, but quite hard to find now.

chocybickie · 20/08/2006 12:24

i'm no help. we have to change our toilet seat every 2 months due to children 'falling off' the seat instead of stepping off and bad aiming.

Nemo1977 · 20/08/2006 21:09

Anyone know how to keep it clean????

OP posts:
Ellaroo · 20/08/2006 21:13

Mine said that it shouldn't be cleaned with cleaning products, just a damp cloth. Wonder if it could be the chemicals causing it to go green. However, have ignored manufacturers advice as feel that it needs to be cleaned with something more than water...so mine is green too .

Molesworth · 20/08/2006 21:21

we all sit on the (perfectly clean) porcelain

southeastastra · 20/08/2006 21:23

you can't it eats into it

MegaLegs · 20/08/2006 21:23

Oooh - I bet that's chilly on a frosty winters morning.

Molesworth · 20/08/2006 21:24

Chilly ... but clean

Nemo1977 · 20/08/2006 21:27

ohhh chilly loo bowl...and not very comfy for ermmm long trips..pmsl

I dont use a lot of cleaning stuff on apart from bleaching when do the bowl. I do wipe with tissues everytime I go to the loo or know ds has been.

OP posts:
Molesworth · 20/08/2006 21:28

Tissues don't get into the cracks where the seat hinges are though

Bucketsofdinosaurs · 20/08/2006 21:29

Don't mean to be rude Molesworth but do you have very large children? I've been known to fall in my toilet if DH leaves the seat up and it's dark.

Molesworth · 20/08/2006 21:29

Must admit my children are large (i.e. teenagers, and big ones at that)

southeastastra · 20/08/2006 21:31

it doesn't matter how old the children are, it's a pita, the hinges are made of a sort of metal coated plastic

Molesworth · 20/08/2006 21:32

They'd soon learn not to fall in. And let's face it, even the smallest child isn't actually going to get flushed away.

tillykins · 20/08/2006 21:41

LOL at being flushed away!

I bet something like lemon juice will clean it off - soak a cloth in lemon juice and wrap it round the hinges to really soak it through

But you need something to sort of coat it don't you?

tigi · 20/08/2006 22:15

I use those flushable toilet cleaning wipes, and they get it off... ( i have a house full of badly-aimed males too!)

Bucketsofdinosaurs · 21/08/2006 08:50

How about clear nail varnish on new hinges? r something silicon/teflon-y to repel water and dirt?
