What can I clean my rings with?

I can't wear my eternity and engagement rings at the moment - they keep making my finger flare up with what seems like dermatitis and is really sore. My wedding ring's ok which is because it's a plain gold band so I think it's the dirt trapped behind the jewels in the other rings. I have dug most of it out but when I put them on (even after allowing my finger to heal) it still flares up again.

Is there something I can soak the rings in to clean them out properly? How can I stop them affecting the skin on my finger so I can wear them?

I use an old toothbrush and toothpaste They sparkle like mad after I'm finished. I also heard fairy liquid would do the job good. (I suppose any kind of washing up liquid, not necessarily fairy)

Jazzi · 14/08/2006 20:59

Gin - leave them to soak, brings em up luverly!!!

SleepyJess · 14/08/2006 21:00

Mmm I have no gin... I have toothpaste too. Or will any other form of alcohol do? (I have beer.. think there is some whisky and brandy somewhere...)

Hydrogen peroxde solution in hot water. They will dazzle,or is you can remember where you got them take them back and see if they will clean them for you in their special maching.. can't remember what it's called.

Jazzi · 14/08/2006 21:01

Has to be gin!!

SleepyJess · 14/08/2006 21:02

Ah yes I remember where they came from.. Elizbeth Duke... .. chip as chips but I love them (Doubt they have a machine tho!)

toothpaste and a toothbrush here too. works like magic

Alibaldi · 14/08/2006 21:06

vodka's just as good if you haven't any gin

Jazzi · 14/08/2006 21:07

Oh is it - never tried vodka!

MrsBadger · 14/08/2006 21:11

toothbrush and toothpaste here as well

it's most likely soap residue that's irritating your fingers - I have trouble sometimes as I wash my hands so often at work. You have to rinse really, really hard!

Alibaldi · 14/08/2006 21:22

It's the alcohol content. I've used Vodka when I've had no gin in. Tequila would probably work as well. Pure alcohol in other words, so Potsheen would probably do the job too!!! lol Just make sur your own vodka/mixer is in the other hand

Diet fizzy drink - the extra carbon bubbles should take most of the dirt out - best if its cold too - Good luck

nicnack2 · 14/08/2006 21:41

i gentle boil mine in washing up liquid and water

SleepyJess · 14/08/2006 22:19

They are now fizzing almost imperceptibly in a glass of tequila left over from last New Year's drinking games. Forgot we had that; hope it works.

And that should have said cheap as chips below by the way re Elizabeth Duke, obv.. and how nice that nobody launched into a derisive account re the inferiority of ED jewellery; none of the snobs on tonight obv..

I had no idea all these things work - I have been taking my engagement ring back to the jewellery shop once a year to clean (and check the um, not sure what to call what holds the diamonds)....

I was so pleased that they came back so shinny, but obviosly wasted £18.00 to get them done when I could have done it myself with Gin or Diet coke...

Coolmama · 15/08/2006 15:31

heiferjames - deffo take your rings in once a year to get the settings checked - you would be heartbroken if the stone in your ring fell out !

heiferjamese · 15/08/2006 17:19

coolmama, been there done that... The insurance did pay out - but I had to pay an extra £200 because I wouldn't use the jeweller that they wanted me to so I used the jeweller that I got it from... and the price for the stone for another £200..... but better safe than sorry

So you are right, I will carry on with my yearly check up but still I can try to clean it myself inbetween...

bubbaloo · 15/08/2006 17:22

If you have a dishwasher, put them in one of those washing tablet bags and put them on the next cycle-they'll come out sparkling.
My mum also boils her rings on the hob in a saucepan of just water, but apparently you can only do this with diamond jewellery.I personally prefer to stick with the dishwasher.

TambaTheDragonSlayer · 15/08/2006 17:41

I use the hot wipes they give you after a curry at the curry house obviously you can onyl do the ones you are wearing at the time....
