Best vacuum cleaner? Is it worth servicing an old Dyson?

My 8 year old Dyson has got rather rubbish at picking stuff up recently, so I'm thinking about either getting a new vacuum cleaner or getting my Dyson serviced. Does anyone have experience of using the Dyson service? If so was it any good?

Next question, if I decide not to service it and buy a new vacuum is would you recommend your vacuum cleaner, and if so what make and model is it please?

I didn't realise they do servicing what happens in servicing? I've had mine about 8 years also not as strong on suction but still does the job. I replaced both spongy filters. I got a near brush head too. I noticed a big difference after replacing filter sponges.

Do you rinse out sponge near cznister that pulls out. That helps too.

If you decide to replace I love my Henry - cheap and small, but great.

I have a vacuum cleaner collection ( very sad person !) including Dysons and I would recommend a Morphy Richards upright , they are brilliant ,I have a lift away canister type. It picks up way better than any Dyson and is less than £150.

Just If you Google Dyson service you'll find the page on their website. They replace parts excluding filters and accessories. It costs £79 including VAT.

On a side note, I've never changed/cleaned the filters until this week Didn't realise you needed to...whoops! Bearing that in mind it's probably amazing it's lasted this long!

In light of the above admission, if I get a new vacuum cleaner it'll need to be a very, very low maintenance one!

floral I was looking at those on Amazon and they've got really good reviews. The only thing which put me off was the fact that people say you can't buy replacement belts for them, so if that goes you need a new vacuum cleaner.

i would service a dyson. though have to admit to getting rid of ours eventually but do regret it.

if you are getting rid of a dyson, bear in mind that they have excellent second hand value on ebay...someone bought my very battered second hand and not working handheld for £40 (they buy for parts/refurbishing)

Service your dyson. Ours is over 12 years old, and for £80 we got a full service and most bits replaced. The collection bit, the motor, the whirly bit that picks up dust and more all included in the £80. It's basically a new hoover except for the back frame bit and cable. The service took about an hour on a Saturday. We said we hoped it would last another 12 months and the service engineer said he reckons it will be good for another 5-6 years now. Any bits the engineer didn't carry were posted with fitting instructions within two weeks. After that customer service we'll stick with dyson.

I was at an auction recently for second hand good and had a list of items to buy - I thought I might get another sego for my dd1 who is moving soon. The second hand hoover went for £60 so they also hold their price and are known for being a decent make

Service, definitely. We've had other cheaper sorts & new Dysons, but old ones are worth keeping going.

I love my dyson so would def go for a service.

henry is pure shite in comparison. I had one before the dyson and it was useless. i used it the day I got my dyson and then went over the carpet with the dyson........couldn't believe what the dyson picked up.

I've had mine a couple of years and it's been fine ,I would definitely get another .

I have a Dyson, although I hate it.
The attachments are always breaking. But there is a local guy who services it. It is an independent shop, and he serviced mine and fixed the hose for £35. I have used him many times- which is why I hate Dysons. So might be worth seeing if local place near you?

I got my dyson serviced for £30 at a hardware store, totally worth it. Will probably get it done again in a year or so.

Our Dyson is still within its 5 years guarantee (its nearly 4 years old now) so I got the last service free. Before that, I was starting to lose faith as it wasn't performing very well, which I put down to its age and the very many carpets we have, young DC etc. I always hoover up leaves too, so this can cause blockages.

Since the service, its been great and me and the Dyson are friends again. I would service it.

Our Dyson is 15 years old and was serviced 2 months ago. They replaced everything except the wheels for €90. It's working really well and we're delighted with it.

Get a Meile if you can, so much better than a Dyson imo.
