Housekeeping

Would you be embarrassed to let unexpected visitors in to your house?

Am I alone in feeling most of the time I would feel uncomfortable letting an unexpected visitor in to my house? It's not filthy but there is stuff everywhere and we just don't have enough room to keep it very tidy.

With two young demanding dc's and working part time I don't get to hoover as often as seems it needs doing and I have a physical condition which means I find cleaning floors very difficult and so dh usually does these, but not as often as I'd like!

Everytime I go in the downstairs toilet the seat is up and there are splashes where little boys have missed the bowl and the towel is inevitably always screwed up on the floor.

My dd is starting to make friends at school and I want to be able to open the door to her friends and their mums at any time instead of planning visits a week in advance so I can clean up!

If your house is always visitor ready, please can you tell me how you manage it?

God, yes, it's a complete slag heap. But it's really not a problem to plan visits, we don't get droppers in (thank the Lord.)

Embarrassed? Not today, no! Tidiest my house has been for months. I wouldn't be happy with it though, does odd things to my anxiety having people turn up without warning and expecting to be let in.

Yes most of the time however we have an electric gate with an out of order for over a year bell Bell. Cue no unexpected callers.

Mine varies massively. On my days off work it usually looks reasonably presentable, then after I've been working a few days in a row things start to slip, and I wouldn't want to let anyone in. I am working on not caring at the moment, but it is an uphill struggle!

Everyone I know knows that I do not do "dropping in unexpectedly". I would love to be one of those people, I really would, it's just not me at all. Not just from a tidiness point of view, although that would ALWAYS be an issue (whenever I hoover, DS asks who's coming Smile) but just generally from a space invasion point of view! I need to psyche myself up for visitors!

Nope. Wouldn't bother me at all. I'm at home so the house is always pretty tidy and if it wasn't, I'd just say, "Excuse the mess and come on in!"

No I wouldn't be embarrassed because the cleaner's been today

Seriously it's usually pretty tidy because that's how I like it. I feel more relaxed when it's tidy. So I tidy up as I go most days and so it never gets too bad. I am also ruthless about throwing things out. Maybe you should aim to declutter one room a month?

Depends who it is! A few close friends and my parents yes. Most other people I would feel slightly anxious! We are quite messy but there is always somewhere to sit! I say to my Mum ignore the mess, she just says oh I'm used to it!
And I do like a clean bathroom so that's usually ok.

I would be mortified. The house hasn't had a proper clean for a number of reasons and I hate it.

Sunday to Friday I would die of shame if anybody just popped round.
Saturday the cleaners come so there is a 3 hour window where all and sundry are welcome.
Luckily (?) no fucker ever bothers with me because I'm too out of the way.

Yes ! The lady who cleans for me has been. ??
Generally clean but untidy.
I hate when the burglar alarm goes off , we're out, and the neighbour with our key comes in to check. It's always a day when the rooms look like they've been hit by a bomb.
I live with untidy people. I'm not too tidy myself but tidier than dh and the dc's.
I'd love to be a neat freak.
Papers and magazine cuttings are my downfall.

no.. it's easy to keep surface clean.

Get a henry (or harry).. the lead goes on for ages so you can hoover the ground floor from one plug. On hard floors, press the thing on the left of the foot to get the bristles and release for carpets.

Get a spray bottle and fill with water and one capfull of zoflora.. take a micro fibre cloth and spray the toilet. Start from the top and work your way down with the cloth.. finishing up with the 'leg' of the toilet on the outside.. that solves any toilet splashes and takes a minute. smells lovely.

or use baby wipes for the same job without the smell.. but don't flush.
