Hey all, thought I'd make a new thread to encourage us all to keep going on the journey to minimalism! Smile

Jimmy I as chatting to a lady in a charity shop and she said that's one of her jobs - to check there are no missing pieces in jigsaws they sell. So the job does exist, it's just a shame it's not a paid one!

Mad tidying today because my mum is coming over, but we are not too stressed because the clutter is not as bad as usual!

JimmyCorkhill · 07/10/2014 07:56

I don't mind doing it for free Grin

fuzzpig · 07/10/2014 08:11

I have to say I really enjoyed that part when I volunteered in a chazzer! Sitting out the back counting game pieces was very therapeutic :o

I had a revelation today - I was looking idly at some character toys in a tub and there were some toy bugs mixed in. They aren't characters, but I can't put them in the (realistic) animal toy tub either because they are really bright and cartoony!

So I'm getting rid :o they are actually lovely so I'm putting them with the stuff for my reception teacher friend. The DCs won't miss them - they have some naice realistic butterflies etc.

educatingarti · 07/10/2014 10:48

When sis and I were little, my mum used to mark all the pieces of a jigsaw with a specific mark - eg red dot on the back of pieces for one puzzle. blue star on pieces for another etc. it made them really easy to sort when pieces of more than one puzzle got mixed up!

clearsommespace · 07/10/2014 12:02

My mum used to do that too Arti and so do I.

DS has decided that the lego which was sorted by colour should be sorted by brick type! Mammoth job but quite therapeutic too.
When we've finished, it will take less space as we'll have less empty space per drawer and may be able to get rid of one storage unit.

evertonmint · 07/10/2014 19:31

Hi all - a bag of newborn clothes left the house today. 2 outfits kept for each child - first thing they wore plus going home outfit. The rest has gone!

My minimalist crockery/diswashing project is evolving. Hand wash breakfast bowls and mugs and out straight away as breakfast is always the annoyance - getting stuff out of dishwasher or no room or not washed. Only one mug and set if cutlery per person as we were using too many of them and stashing them in the dishwasher. A few bowls and plates each.

It means all the cooking utensils fit in the dishwasher rather than having to be handwashed and we have one load that goes on at night and is emptied at leisure after school rush. Much better all round if we can stick to it!

2 items on Gumtree. No interest so far but it's only been a few hours Grin Want to put DD2's massive plastic activity centre thing (like a Wendy house with no roof) on too but every time I decide to do it she starts playing with it again!

JimmyCorkhill · 10/10/2014 08:54

Boo, no interest at all on my Gumtree items.

Feel at a bit of a standstill as there is still lots of decluttering to do but it's either the dull stuff like paperwork or the really emotional stuff like photo's.

Am working on DH to get rid of the plastic shed in the back garden. We have a tiny yard and the shed is taking up precious space. Inside is our tent (last used in 2011) and the box of camping paraphernalia. Outdoor toys that could easily be stored in the Wendy house. And I can't remember the other things so they can't be that important. We have decluttered this once before but I find things need an initial declutter then a 2nd go!

Also have a pair of barely worn Ugg boots I need to take to the chazzer. I just balk at how much I spent on them but I never wear them.

clearsommespace · 10/10/2014 17:57

Remember the money was wasted when you purchased them.

I have been through my DIY clothes. We did some serious DIY last year but now I really only need one DIY 'outfit'.

DS and I just purchased new Lego storage. The old storage will be up for sale this weekend hopefully.

erin99 · 11/10/2014 21:04

Any luck on gumtree yet Jimmy?

Bag of clothes out this week and I had an impromptu friend round this week without being too embarrassed to let her in :)

However the lakeland catalogue just came through the door. Oh the temptation! I especially want these: www.lakeland.co.uk/24023/Sand-Knitted-Tote for absolutely no reason whatsoever.

fuzzpig · 12/10/2014 15:15

Resist the tote!

erin99 · 12/10/2014 17:10

Grin thank you fuzzpig.

I literally can't think of a use for it, which says it all I think.

jellyfishandcream · 12/10/2014 18:31

Hello all, I used to be relatively regular on here under my old name (delasi) but I've managed to forget all log in details, I believe there was a name change at some point, and then I think I actually deleted my account, I don't remember now... Grin I've been busy which is a good enough reason not to MN so much!

Anyway I've got a bit more spare time on my hands and will do for a bit as DC2 is due next month, and I've found myself thinking back to all of the tips and motivation I got from here. Long story short, we moved and we've been trying to make sure that the place stays fairly minimal and keep cutting things. Very little has been added but plenty has gone.

We only have 4 of each in the kitchen (plates, bowls, side plates, mugs) and about 4-6 tumblers, we got rid of more appliances that don't get used and we only own ones that do get used. I've arranged the kitchen with all manner of spatial awareness and storage baskets to make sure that we can see and use things easily, we don't really stockpile like we used to, lots of gaps on shelves which is surprisingly nice feeling! Likewise with the fridge. Sometimes I see we have had something for a month or two (eg a chutney) that really wasn't popular hence we still have it, so it goes out. Sounds small but it makes a big difference to how we live in our space, and I particularly notice the difference when we are with family who hang on to so much 'just in case' and end up with lots of food past its best before that they have no intention of ever actually eating.

The majority of the home is now pretty streamlined Shock but there is a little bit of work left in our bedroom, largely because that has become the store room for things as toddler DS can't get in there! It's mainly a few books and some random small boxes needing dealing with (eg useful but not every day stuff, like degree certificates, warranties for items). I got DH to finally sort out his cable madness which was very successful, and now we have the tool "box" ahem bag of random DIY rubbish to sort out. Clothes have been very successful, nothing added to unless necessary, like replacing a pair of shoes where the soles were coming off and beyond repair. When we do buy it is stuff that we really like and will wear, we will spend more on individual items than we used to but are spending less overall due to buying 'smart'. My budget side will not disappear and we make use of plenty of sale offers, vouchers and cashback deals Grin but no more buying things just because they are cheap.

The best part has been no longer wanting to shop and finding it very easy not to purchase things. I used to always want to buy stuff whilst out, but now I just look at things in terms of their potential to clutter my home! I do buy stuff we need, but I think so much more sensibly about it now; eg I just got a new kettle, and focused on its utility and how it would fit in the kitchen, and the old one went straight out. I could see my DF practically twitch at the prospect of simply getting rid of a kettle that technically still worked (it boiled but had been on the blink a while and had a broken lid beyond repair). I do not need a good kettle and a bad kettle however.

We also really enjoy what we buy as we only get what we really want or need. We just got a particular cooking utensil/appliance, it's slightly specialist and most people wouldn't need one, but for us it is perfect and we use it pretty much every day because it is relevant to the type of food that we eat. I have a space for it and it only cost £10 so even better Grin

Well that was a bit of a long reintroduction but anyway, nice to see you all again! Off to read through some of the thread...

equokka · 13/10/2014 11:28

Hi all! I'm new to MN (well, have been lurking for a while but this is my first post) but not new to minimalism - although I've fallen off the wagon a bit lately and stuff has crept back up in volume... This thread has given me some inspiration to get back on track! I'm due with my first baby in a month, so I figure if I don't get things done now, they may not get done for a while! We keep getting given hand me down clothes and baby stuff, and I feel like it's taking over my house, but as this is my first I have no idea what I should actually keep and what we won't really need. Hopefully that will all become clear in a month or so, so in the meantime I am getting rid of books that have sat on the shelves for years, unread (if I haven't read them by now, am I really going to??), and fearfully tackling the garage which has become a dumping ground...

educatingarti · 13/10/2014 13:07

Welcome to all newcomers and returners. I had a particularly bad week last week after getting the mother of all migraines last Sunday on my way back from visiting mum's. It was a real out of the blue, one second I'm ok and one second I'm really not, one with horrendous pain, vomiting and inability to tolerate light etc. I had to get 2 friends to come and rescue me from Keele Services! I didn't work at all last week and it has taken me all week to tidy up the stuff I "unpacked" all over the hallway. So very much baby steps for me ATM!

jellyfishandcream · 13/10/2014 13:18

Oh wow arti really hope you're feeling much better. I remember this being discussed some time back on an earlier thread, but it seems many people looking to minimalise are also contending with health issues and unexpected setbacks, the minimalism helps to manage things but likewise can feel like a slower process due to the external issues. But it sounds like you've done really well to sort things over the week, it is easy to continue living out of the packed bag/not putting things back...

Some baby steps here too for the remaining tasks but hopefully will make slow and steady progress. Having to take it easy for current stage of pregnancy so it will involve some directing of DH whilst DC1 sleeps and simple tasks for me. DC1 sleeps well so that's all good, but it limits the amount of time available to do things!

erin99 · 13/10/2014 13:30

Welcome newcomers and returners. Jellyfish thank you for the very inspiring post! Arti how horrible, I hope you are ok now. Even a 'minor' migraine can really knock the stuffing out of you.

I am starting to think seriously about Christmas - specifically DC's gifts (and their birthdays... bad idea to have babies in Dec and Jan!). I don't think we go too mad generally but I keep seeing things I want to get them, and they do have a lot already. I honestly do think too much stuff is Bad, but OTOH a six year old boy does have different interests from a 5 year old boy, especially when he's stopped playing with his trains and hexbugs, and only gets effectively one set of new toys a year.

erin99 · 13/10/2014 13:33
  • 'minor' migraine - not meaning to imply yours was minor. I meant even a minor one is bad enough so a massive one like that must really knock you sideways.
JimmyCorkhill · 13/10/2014 16:06

Hello to returners, newbies and the rest of you!

arti I hope you are feeling better Flowers

Gumtree has been a non starter Sad I did have one enquiry about my IKEA highchair. A random Q about when I bought it. No response since. Maybe they were looking for an antique plastic high chair and mine was too modern Grin I am going to ask my friend who is a brand new 1st time granny if her daughter wants it. Then it can go to her or the chazzer. The other item is too nice to just give away though. I might try Ebay before admitting defeat.

Found my Colour Me Beautiful colour swatches and have been having fun using it. I have a lot of burgundy/maroon clothes. Not my colour. I wish there was a colour swatch for household items. It would make decluttering a lot simpler!!

Ugg boots are in a bag for the chazzer along with a materity dressing gown. Too wet to venture out today though.

JimmyCorkhill · 13/10/2014 16:07

Meant to say Gumtree was a non starter, thanks for asking erin Grin

Minisoksmakehardwork · 13/10/2014 22:15

Hello still marching on Wink

Kitchen is slightly less cluttered thanks to binning loads of stuff. Dh hasn't noticed yet...

Lounge is reasonable. Just need to clean bookshelves and reframe pictures when Dts broke frames. I've even managed to keep the dining table clear (or at least easy to clear) for meals. Dc have every meal there now. Dh and I don't eat our evening meal until later but if anyone is home I make sure I sit with them even if I'm not eating. Hoping to improve some table manners.

Loft is... More jam packed than ever before. But I have got rid of two double pushchairs and one high chair in the last few days. (Sobs at thought of the Dts growing up). Broken toys are culled as soon as they are broken now. I've given up putting them aside to 'fix'. Will catch up with where everyone is at now I've found you all again

fuzzpig · 14/10/2014 10:43

Welcome to the thread and to MN, equokka! :) eeek a month to go, how exciting!

Hi jelly I remember you as delasi, nice to see you again! Sounds like you're doing well with minimalism :)

I've joined the flylady thread as I'm struggling with decluttering and my health - every time I do more than say half an hour I seem to suffer for it :(

DH and I are both off in half term (sorry I think I'm mentioned that several times already :o) so will get him doing most of the heavy stuff!

fuzzpig · 14/10/2014 10:44

And hello and best wishes to everyone else - sorry I am terrible with names, my brain is failing me ATM.

Natalie1989xo · 14/10/2014 10:50

Hey ladies,

This is the first time joining you on any of the housekeeping threads. I used to have a beautifully tidy, minimalistic home which was easy to keep tidy, clean and lovely. Over the years I have acquired clutter, tat and the need to have everything on display. My house looks messy and very busy. I have a large 3 bed townhouse so have plenty of space. Decent storage space that is wasted, an example of this is my cupboard under the stairs, which is unorganised and stuffed with crap!

My plan is to de clutter my shelves and units, then move on to the said cupboard and organise that. And then it is to move on to another room! (All of the above is in the living room)
