Hello all, I used to be relatively regular on here under my old name (delasi) but I've managed to forget all log in details, I believe there was a name change at some point, and then I think I actually deleted my account, I don't remember now...
I've been busy which is a good enough reason not to MN so much!
Anyway I've got a bit more spare time on my hands and will do for a bit as DC2 is due next month, and I've found myself thinking back to all of the tips and motivation I got from here. Long story short, we moved and we've been trying to make sure that the place stays fairly minimal and keep cutting things. Very little has been added but plenty has gone.
We only have 4 of each in the kitchen (plates, bowls, side plates, mugs) and about 4-6 tumblers, we got rid of more appliances that don't get used and we only own ones that do get used. I've arranged the kitchen with all manner of spatial awareness and storage baskets to make sure that we can see and use things easily, we don't really stockpile like we used to, lots of gaps on shelves which is surprisingly nice feeling! Likewise with the fridge. Sometimes I see we have had something for a month or two (eg a chutney) that really wasn't popular hence we still have it, so it goes out. Sounds small but it makes a big difference to how we live in our space, and I particularly notice the difference when we are with family who hang on to so much 'just in case' and end up with lots of food past its best before that they have no intention of ever actually eating.
The majority of the home is now pretty streamlined
but there is a little bit of work left in our bedroom, largely because that has become the store room for things as toddler DS can't get in there! It's mainly a few books and some random small boxes needing dealing with (eg useful but not every day stuff, like degree certificates, warranties for items). I got DH to finally sort out his cable madness which was very successful, and now we have the tool "box" ahem bag of random DIY rubbish to sort out. Clothes have been very successful, nothing added to unless necessary, like replacing a pair of shoes where the soles were coming off and beyond repair. When we do buy it is stuff that we really like and will wear, we will spend more on individual items than we used to but are spending less overall due to buying 'smart'. My budget side will not disappear and we make use of plenty of sale offers, vouchers and cashback deals
but no more buying things just because they are cheap.
The best part has been no longer wanting to shop and finding it very easy not to purchase things. I used to always want to buy stuff whilst out, but now I just look at things in terms of their potential to clutter my home! I do buy stuff we need, but I think so much more sensibly about it now; eg I just got a new kettle, and focused on its utility and how it would fit in the kitchen, and the old one went straight out. I could see my DF practically twitch at the prospect of simply getting rid of a kettle that technically still worked (it boiled but had been on the blink a while and had a broken lid beyond repair). I do not need a good kettle and a bad kettle however.
We also really enjoy what we buy as we only get what we really want or need. We just got a particular cooking utensil/appliance, it's slightly specialist and most people wouldn't need one, but for us it is perfect and we use it pretty much every day because it is relevant to the type of food that we eat. I have a space for it and it only cost £10 so even better
Well that was a bit of a long reintroduction but anyway, nice to see you all again! Off to read through some of the thread...
