A washer / dryer that's any good?

We have a washing machine and need to get a tumble dryer too (I just spend far too much of my time hanging socks, vests, babygros on the airer...) but space is a premium. I would love to get a washer/dryer to save space, but have heard people complain about them generally. Does anyone have one that is any good?

Just in general, I am a 40 degree every wash person, don't need an all singing all dancing machine just somethig to wash and 40 degrees then dry!

Washer dryers do tend to have condensing dryers. We've had some bad experiences with the reliability of AEG in the past 5 years, but now have a lovely (but pricey) Siemens. The only problem we've had was down to a hairball getting stuck in the drainage pump, but it was fixed quickly. Bosch do the same one with their own branding on it.

What I will say is that they do tend to go wrong, to varying degrees, as there's so much crammed in there, so get the longest warranty you can.

I'm in the same predicament, we don't have anywhere to put two machines. Are they expensive to run?

Just seen this, OP. It's rather discouraging about washer dryers in general, though.

I've also heard that Bosch are good in general. We do technically have space for a dryer but it would mean stacking one on top of the other. We have an old wc which houses the washing machine and I have visions of lots of lovely shelving units on top of the machine so that I can use it as a utility 'cupboard'! Can't do that if there is a separate dryer on top though.

We had a Miele one and while it wasn't as good as two separate machines I was very pleased with it. Highly recommended.

Dame- when you say not very good, not good in what way? Didn't wash / dry properly? Or slow or something?

The best thing about having the washer/dryer separate is that you can be drying one load whilst washing the next. It takes twice as long with a washer/dryer.

I only have space for one machine. My last three machines have been washer /dryers. One was second hand when I got it ( from my granddad) Then I got one of my own which was just as reliable and in fact still works but I replaced it with a different one last year as it was hard to get repaired (no parts). Its now a back up machine in my utility room outside. I am not sure they make Ariston anymore and certainly not the old one I had.

I replaced it with a Hotpoint Aquiltas. Large drum. I am told they are not so reliable but I havent had any trouble with it and I like it.
