Dyson is dying, do we replace with another or get something different?

I have had a quick search of previous threads but thought i'd start my own. 11/12 year old dyson is cutting out after a short while of vacuuming and it's time to be replaced. I only get a short time to clean the house so I need the vacuum to work until I decide it's finished Grin

I would really appreciate recommendations please. My needs; 3 bed house with laminate/tiles in most rooms. Carpet in lounge and stairs. We have a cat but she doesn't create much mess. Household is 4 (2 adults 2 kids) at work/school most of the time so not heavy duty messy (normally!!)

my washing machine and laptop have also given up so was hoping maybe something other than a dyson might suit us better, but I have loved my dyson so I keep looking at them and wondering if they're worth the extra money. The last one was a wedding present!

TIA Smile

I am a cleaner and a big fan of the Miele especially if you get the attachment that beats and spins around. They generally come with the Cat and Dog version, but I got a second hand one off ebay and stuck it onto a cheaper model. You then have a cylinder with all the benefits of an upright. The tools are great.

I do also recommend the Henry with one big but, they are not good for doing stairs as they are too round and you have to hold them to stop them toppling down.

At home we have a Miele for upstairs and downstairs. I just love them.

HTH.

Do you have somewhere that could repair the dyson? Not necessarily a dyson authorised dealer but a local independent, which may be cheaper?

BranchingOut · 02/02/2014 16:44

Miele all the way.
Though Henry's are favoured by builders for their indestructible nature.

Eddas · 02/02/2014 17:13

Thanks, i'll take a look at miele.

I did consider repairing the dyson and have tried things like a new filter already and have cleaned it extensively, but I just don't know how worth it is really because it's so old. I could try ringing someone for a quote I guess. No harm in that.

I might find someone who can repair the washing machine too Grin think the pump has gone in that. Joy!

you can't beat a Miele. They do make uprights as well but they are more expensive.

Do you have lots of downstairs carpets, that benefit from an upright to get the grit out?

Eddas · 02/02/2014 20:39

Piglet. I only have carpet on the stairs and landing and also front room. Everywhere else is tiles or laminate

then I think you would be OK with a cylinder, especially if you can get a head with whirling beaters.

Some of the Bosch cylinders are very good, and not as expensive as Mieles.

It is much more expensive to make a really good upright than to make a really good cylinder.

Eddas · 02/02/2014 23:38

Thanks piglet. I have to say I have no idea what tge difference is between upright and cylinder Blush

I wish ours would die, horrible heavy over complicated object.

an upright has the motorised head that you push around on wheels, all in one piece. The head has beaters and brushes in it which are very good for getting dirt, grit, fleas, moth eggs out of the carpet.

Cylinder vacs are the ones with a hose that follow you around like a dog, and a suction head on the end of a rigid tube attached to the hose. They are fine for hard floors, and upstairs where people do not trample mud and grit into the carpets.

Cylinder vacs used to be cylindrical in shape, they are often egg-shaped or tub-shaped now.
