dry cleaners?

I always shampoo my wool carpets with a vax machine. As long as the water isnt too hot its ok.

hire a Rug Doctor machine - they are fab ! can get them from homebase or some dry-cleaners etc - costs about £25 for 24 hours - really really worth it - i am having one this wkend !

Have you tried baby wipes? I use them on my wool rug and it comes up a treat (but might be a bit labour-intensive if you have to do the whole rug). Mine is dark and patterned so I just clean any stains rather than the whole thing usually.

This is going to sound a bit mad, but I was watching that programme 'Cleanaholics' and one of the people they featured used a bowl of water and her hand to clean the carpet. She just swept her wet bare hand across the carpet and collected the bits. Feeling a bit bored I tried this technique and my carpet that has never been washed and is about 5 years old looks like new. The only problem is that your hand gets a bit sore.
