Not sure if this is the right thread. The fridge is not cold, but the light is still on and it still makes a noise. Also the freezer is still working.

Will I have to pay a fortune to get it fixed, it's only 21/2 years old. I thought Zanussi was supposed to be a good make.

hmm
di get a new one

handlemecarefully · 31/07/2006 23:16

Does it have an integral ice box at the top? If so - does that need defrosting?

crouchingtigeress · 31/07/2006 23:23

No, it's one of those frost free ones.

Ummm dunno then - sorry!

Excuse me insulting your intelligence however - do you think your hand my have inadvertently brushed against the temperature regulator and set it too low? Have you checked this?

This happened to me once - discovered fridge was at setting 1 rather than setting 3

crouchingtigeress · 31/07/2006 23:41

I changed it from 3 to 6, still no change.

is it well ventilated at the back? sometimes they can overheat? and the auto defrost but can get blocked, but i think that might only be the freezer. worth a look, though.
mine is on setting number 9 (is this getting a bit spinal tap?) and it's not really very cold either. freezer still working and it's still making noise.
have phoned manufacturer and engineer will be shaking his head and pursing his lips at it on Thursday.
you have my sympathy...

crouchingtigeress · 31/07/2006 23:59

Thank you both for comments.

Actually it is rather close to the wall - I shall try a move.

Good luck with engineer - please post back how it went.

the bloke has been. turns out that a drainage hole in the freezer had got blocked. not by anything i put in it, i should add, the chap had to open up the back of the freezer from the inside, expose the element (which was all frozen up, hence the blockage) and use a hairdryer on it to melt the ice. it's working fine now.
if i was you i'd try this first before calling anyone, it only took the guy about five minutes to do. unless of course you have a guarantee.

aitch71 · 03/08/2006 14:12

oh, and i asked him why it had happened and he said muttered something darkly about frost-free fridges being the bane of his life and i should count myself lucky that i had a good hairdryer.

ah yes, frost-free freezers. Very common.

If the ducts at the back clog up with ice, the DIY cure is to turn them off, take out all the food and eat it, and leave the doors open for at least a day until there is no more water dripping inside or out (you have to pull it away from the wall, after unplugging, to clean out the water from the evaporation dish at the back, and prevent it overflowing or spilling into any electrical part.

Sometimes it is because the freezer foor has been left open to much, and sometimes it is the heater element of control that has failed. The DIY defrost is usually cheaper than paying for a repair.

Its a good thing we had lots of snow and it was cold down here in london the last week our fridge has been giving us a bit a trouble and quite a few engineers came out to look at it one of those american style machines was just about to give up when our neighbour gave me the number of agsrefrigeration who we called they came out next day and found what the cause was and replaced faulty part at a reasonable cost and everything seems to be working ok now. At last.
