How to clean the black marks off washing machine rubber seal?

Thats it really, unfortunately 6 years worth of mould are now beginning to rub off on the clothes when i take them out. I bought some rubber seal wipes from lakeland, but they didnt help (think i should have bought them 6 years ago).

(Also- its not as gruesome as it sounds btw)

Thanks

Watching with interest as we have the same problem here...

Make a paste of bicarbonate of soda and water (sort of toothpaste consistency). Smooth it over the black marks and leave it for 30 mins. Wipe it off with kitchen roll, then do a service wash with the machine empty, using soda crystals (under £1 in the supermarket) instead of your usual washing powder. Works every time for me.

ooooh that sounds great (not least because it doesnt mention scrubbing for hours). Thanks!!

You can also try the Kitchen Cleaner with Bleach sprays.

Dilute bleach or other mould sprays kills the mildew, once it is dead, it is easier to clean away, rubbing with more of the cleaner. On hard surfaces a green nylon scourer or a toothbrush will speed up the cleaning, though it might scuff a rubber seal.

Leave the door ajar between uses so it can dry out.

Honestly, I'm too lazy to scrub anything. Bicarbonate of soda does 80% of my housework for me, and vinegar most of the rest of it.

krisskross · 21/01/2014 12:27

oh no- ive tried the bicarb but it didn't make any difference (i'm sure it was a good tip couthy, just that our machine is too bad for it!!!).

I also looked at our mould and mildew remover and it says not to use on rubber...aahahahah.

Any other tips? I suspect we might need to replace it now.

Thanks!

White vinegar in kitchen roll? Toothpaste works on mouldy grout, but I'm not sure it will work on a grey rubber seal!

Mooycow · 21/01/2014 15:36

we replaced our's when it got really scummy, much cheaper lazier than trying to clean it.

I use hg mould remover on ours then run a hot wash

krisskross · 22/01/2014 21:49

Not sure if what I do is 'right' but I whack a good splash of bleach in, leave for an hour or so and put it on the longest hottest wash I can find.
So far I haven't bleached the next washing batch Wink

I used the HG mould remover on ours. It worked really well, better than anything else I've used previously.

krisskross · 24/01/2014 14:46

thanks all, ill try the HG stuff.
