smelly divan drawers

We lived in a damp rented flat a couple of years ago for 6 months and as a result our new bed soaked up some of this damp and the drawers have smelt ever since.

I've aired them properly and doused them in mould & mildew spray. We moved out of the flat over a year ago so I'm sure the mould is dead/dried out etc.

But the drawers still smell v bad, and I can't shift it (although tbh haven't tried much other than febreeze) they haven't had anything in them for months and I would like to start using them again....

I'd be v grateful for any tips!

dilute bleach should do it (or bathroom spray containing bleach) mixed with a GP cleaner like flash or own-brand. wipe with a moistened rag or sponge. The chlorine kills mould as long as it isn't going to get damp again. Rubber gloves, obv. You can take the drawers right out to clean. They are probably painted or wrapped MDF with hardboard bases.

Preferably do it outdoors on a sunny day (ha ha).

Consider also using tumble dryer sheets in there to help them suck up a better smell over the mould one IYSWIM.
