Have you ever washed your sofa cushion covers and they disintegrate?

Help!

I bought a fabric sofa, and at the time was told by the store not to put the cushion covers in the wash, as they would disintegrate due to the fire retardant coating/protection malarkey.

Trouble is, they are a bit dirty, and I would like to wash them more than with a damp cloth.

Has anyone done this before?

Yep, I do it regularly. Mine are a waffle-weave type fabric from M&S in a light biscuity fabric so they get grubby really easily.

I put them in the machine, zipped up (i do mine the right way round, but you could turn yours inside out depending on the fabric and if you think it's likely that the edges of the inside seams will fray)

I use a non biological powder and wash on 30deg with a reduced spin because a high revolution spun can leave them crumpled. Then hang out to dry on the line. I def wouldn't tumble dry them though.

Because mine are made from a textured fabric I don't need to iron them as the crinkles stretch out once they're back on the cushions. But if I did then a low heat would do the trick, and perhaps put a tea towel in between if I was worried about it becoming shiny from the iron.

HTH

I might brave one and see how it goes. Thanks for the advice

Mine are also "do not put in wash", every look much better after a 40' wash every 6months. Just don't wash with fabric conditioner as will make the fabric go floppy.

I did this with my sofa covers and they are ruined :(

They are shredded at the back and along the seams. Can't afford a new sofa or new covers. Thinking about getting so throws.

Be warned!

I do with mine
. Zip them up and turn them inside put. Then put them on a low temp quick wash with no softener.

Or you could give them a good wash with a soapy cloth and put them in the machine for a rinse and spin.

Or put them in on a low temp quick wash with delicate spin/no spin.

They say it will ruin the fire retardant nature of the fabric but I've washed several of my sofa fabric seat cushions, esp when young children wee on them! The "wrong" side of them look shabby but the outside is fine. We're not smokers so hopefully only have a small chance of catching fire anyway. Mine were M&S ones. Haven't tried it with the new Ikea ones yet, children have grown up a bit!

Right, I'm going to turn one inside out and try it in the normal wash.

Wish me luck!

Well I put it on a 15 min 30 degree cycle on its on with non bio and no softener.

It didn't disintegrate :)

I'll do the rest in about three goes, just to make sure I don't wreck the whole sofa in one go

Put them back on when they're still slightly damp or you will struggle.

Oly it was only a small one, but yes the big cushions and seat covers, I'll remember to do that, thanks
