Telephone with caller ID

I have had a BT Relate 2100 with caller ID for years. It's not been ideal (hands free does not work very well) but the Caller ID/Display has always worked fine. Just recently it has stopped working. I have asked my telephone provider (Post Office) about it and they said to ring them back if the fault was still there after a week. The week is up tomorrow. Since then from it not working intermittently it has now stopped working entirely. If they say tomorrow that the fault is on the telephone what do I do? I have my whole telephone book on its SIM card, ringtones programmed in, will I lose them all?
The Relate 2100 is no longer in production. I may be able to get one, but do I want to? If not what else do I get? I feel woefully ignorant.
Just at the moment I could do without this as my dh is quite poorly in the local hospice.

sorry about your husband.

most phones now have caller ID built in and speakerphone, and it is easy to check this on the packaging. Not expensive either, you can also get a set of two or more phones to save running up and down stairs for about £25. Pop down your local Homebase, Argos, Tesco etc. BTW you should also have a basic corded phone (even if you keep it in a drawer) as cordless ones also need mains power so don't work in a power cut.

not sure about the numbers, regrettably they may have to be reprogrammed. :-(

oh yes - if changing the phone doesn't help, shout at the Post Office to check they haven't turned off your caller ID.

Thank you that is really helpful. Do you know about transferring my phonebook from one phone to the other?

The idea of having two phones with Caller ID appeals as I am forever running up and downstairs to check who is calling. I also have a third corded phone, so could keep that going.

You mention your phone has a SIM card. That could be useful, as there is a good chance that your phone contacts could be stored on it, and may be transportable to a compatible phone.

Look on Ebay and see if anyone is selling the same model of phone.

See if your phone is capable of connecting to a PC to synchronise its addressbook - my mobiles are, if so, you may be able to copy and store your addressbook onto the PC, and possibly later copy it onto a new phone. I have only ever done this with mobiles, not a house phone. If you have lost the instruction book you can probably download one fron the 'net.

In your position I would be starting to copy my contacts into a paper address book, it will be very tiresome if they are only on your phone and its stops working.

I now use Siemens cordless phones, they can copy contact names and numbers between phones, either individually or as the complete list, which is very handy and will be useful if one or more of them goes wrong. I expect other cordless phones can do the same, but Siemens come out very well on Which tests. You can sometimes get last year's model at a reduced price from the Argos or Tesco clearance sites which are on ebay, I did that to get some extra handsets (you can have four handsets per desk station). They come with rechargable batteries which are the same as you can buy in supermarkets or Aldi if they go weak after a few years and are easy to change.
