tea tree?

lemon?

what kind of smells exactly?

JackieNo · 24/07/2006 17:37

Often it's not essential oils, but bicarb that can help. Depends what's causing it and where it's coming from.

lemon and lime are v good. What sort of smells?

expatinscotland · 24/07/2006 18:13

lemongrass is ingredibly potent smell-wise.

hotmama · 24/07/2006 18:18

I put TeaTree oil in my nappy bins -they don't smell stinky then!

TooTicky · 24/07/2006 18:20

Horrid bummy smell caused by someone with poor personal hygiene (not me!) sitting on a wood and fabric chair. Yuck!

fill a spray bottle w/water and add orange, lemon and lemongrass oils. a few drops will do.

do you have a steam cleaner? that can help, too.

beckybrastraps · 24/07/2006 18:21

Shake a few drops of essential oil (I use lavender) with some bicarb, sprinkle on the chair. Leave for a bit and then hoover off. Works for me, although it is a bit "shake 'n' vac"!

Greensleeves · 24/07/2006 18:49

[vomit] at "bummy smell"

liquidclocks · 24/07/2006 19:17

don't know about essential oils but febreeze (original NOT one of the new 'aroma' type ones) works on wee, vomit and even DH's trainers!

TooTicky · 24/07/2006 19:22

Greensleeves, I have to live with it!
liquidclocks, I wouldn't use febreze because they test on animals.

ticky i just matured a mix of 25 drops of sweet orange, 15 lemon and 5 of bergamot to make body spray and it's fab! would work as a room spray or to get rid of the bummy smell, too, mixed w/a little vodka and some vegetable glycerin. for the body spray, i use witch hazel b/c DD1 likes it to cool down - i put it in the fridge.

i won't use fabreeze, either, b/c it is also terrible for animals and humans to inhale.

expat, I've just ordered a batch of citrussy oils from Country Harmony - they are very good value, deliver quickly and don't charge for postage. Thanks for your ideas

Excellent. One thing to do w/essential oils is a blot test to ensure your oil is solvent-free and pure.

Blot a drop or two on thick white paper.

Pure essential oils won't leave any residue once evaporated, whereas petroleum will.

I buy all mine from Abbey Botanicals b/c I have been using them for years and have found theirs are the best quality for the money.

It can be difficult to blend them, and Abbey also offers some amazing blends to burn or mix into carrier oil.

expatinscotland · 24/07/2006 19:58

Oh, they don't stock products that may be made from animals, such as musk and/or castor oil.

TooTicky · 24/07/2006 21:12

Thanks expat, I didn't know about the solvents.

If you're interested in such things, I highly recommend 'Better Basics for the Home' by Annie Berthold-Bond. It's worth its weight in gold for excellent tips.

She contracted Lyme Disease and became chemically sensitive.

Most of her 'recipes' and tips are also vegetarian and vegan-friendly as well.

I've got a little book called Natural Stain Remover which is good - but such is my MN habit these days that I post a question before checking my own resources
