Rust on draw/cupboard handles

Bakerof3pudsxx · 29/12/2013 12:38

The handles of my kitchen cupboards and doors are a little rusty, it's only the lower ones in the food prep area so I assume it's from things being spilt and not cleaned up

Any tips to get it off?

Are they chrome plated steel or what?

A green nylon scourer will rub off light surface rust but will eventually dull the surface.

It might be your aggressive kitchen cleaner that is causing it, unless you have a very humid kitchen.

You can polish them up with a rag moistened with WD40 which will give shine and slight temporary protection, but it will be an unending job.

Bloody hudl, why did it do that?

Weelady77 · 29/12/2013 13:59

Mines is plated as it's the plating coming off think its buggered!!

If the plating is coming off, yes, you're doomed. I prefer brushed stainless. Have look and see if they are held on with one screw from behind (most knobs, easy to change)

Bar handles usually have two screws, measure the spacing, you might be lucky and find new ones with the exact same spacing, if not, get a slightly larger one.

Look at IronmongeryDirect who have a very wide range of all qualities and better prices than boutique kitchen merchants.

Nothing is falling off mine

I was hopeful someone would have a quick fix with vinegar or something

You can get a bottle of Jenolite liquid rust remover from Halfords or similar, it is a strong acid so gloves, apron, glasses, warm water nearby to wash off any splashes. Don't get an alternative rust treatment as they mostly turn it hard and black ready for painting. Lock it away in your shed afterwards.
