We need to get an undercounter fridge and freezer. Tempted by John Lewis for quality and Beko for price! Any thoughts on this thrilling topic most welcome!

Things are cheap for a reason, the JL one will probably last longer. Also I'm sure BEKO had a major problem with their dishwashers setting on fire recently and they were in trouble for not telling people they needed to be recalled.

ChippingInLovesChristmasLights · 28/12/2013 19:33

If it was a washing machine/dishwasher (ie moving parts) I'd say JL everytime. A fridge/freezer - not so much to go wrong. I'd probably choose more based on things like volume & looks countered with cost.

KatherinaMinola · 28/12/2013 19:36

It was the Beko fridge freezer that caused those fires. Beko did not recall them even though they knew of the risk and even once they knew that people had died in the fires, IIRC. So I'd go with JL.

SwedishEdith · 28/12/2013 19:37

You'll get a 3 year guarantee with JL, only 1 or 2 with Beko - if that makes any difference. JL are usually Electrolux for fridges and freezers, I think.

Use AO.com.

Brilliant customer service, next day delivery.
I have used them and would highly recommend.

ilovepowerhoop · 28/12/2013 19:40

We have had a couple of beko fridge freezers with no issues.

addictedtosugar · 28/12/2013 19:44

AO.com washing machine delivered, for free, this afternoon.
Avoid beko if you can afford to.

When you say 'John Lewis' - they sell various brands, presumably you mean the JL-branded ones. Curious to know who they're actually made by.

When we were looking at Beko, it seemed they used older coolants than others - which meant that in theory they might be better if you had to run them in a cold environment (freezer in garage type thing) but we were put off by reliability concerns.

WoodBurnerBabe · 28/12/2013 19:45

Hmmm. My BEKO tumble dryer was delivered today... Should I be worried?

BettyMacdonald · 28/12/2013 19:47

My friend's (under full warranty) JL dishwasher recently caught fire.....she had a total nightmare with their customer service team: things only got sorted when she threatened to dump the faulty dishwasher in their nearest store...

BikeRunSki · 28/12/2013 19:49

Fridges have moving parts, you just can't see them.

We have rented a few houses to live/holiday over the years and every appliance that has packed up has been Beko. Including a fridge in a holiday cottage, ruining a week's worth of nice food.

I believe JL own brand is Zanussi and AEG rebadged. DH's well to do dr aunt always buys JL appliances and has had the same fridge and freezer for the 15 years I have known her. On this basis we got a JL drier a couple of years ago. We have just (yesterday) got a new fridge freezer. The only reason it isn't JL brand is because it needs to go under some shelves and only 1 model (a Bosch) was short enough - although it did come from JL and the delivery was excellent. All done and dusted, old one and packaging taken away by 7.45 am on delivery day!

ouryve · 28/12/2013 19:54

We have Beko separates, but only got them because it was either that or Hotpoint at the size we wanted (5' tall) and the BEKO are better designed. We've had them 3 years with no issues, except a cracked drawer front, which was replaced without quibble.

You have more choice if you want under counter separates, though. If you want quality, look at Bosch. I don't know about their fridges etc, but JL's washers are made by AEG-Electrolux, which are crap, these days.

ErrolTheDragon · 28/12/2013 19:56

When we had our kitchen done a couple of years ago, we were advised that the best brand for freezers - better than Meile but not so expensive - were Liebherr, who we'd never heard of. JL stock them, so that might be another option.

ChippingInLovesChristmasLights · 28/12/2013 19:57

Bike Xmas Grin I know fridges have 'moving parts' Xmas Grin what I meant was 'many many more' moving parts, more than the motor.

I used Boots electrical online when I bought my washing machine and I'd use them again - they are fab.

ErrolTheDragon · 28/12/2013 19:58

If you want quality, look at Bosch
we've got a bosch washing machine, it isn't that great tbh.

INeedALieIn · 28/12/2013 20:01

We manage rentals. 100's of them. Have done it for years. We always use beko for all appliances. They are very reliable.

I have a JL fridge fridge freezer and it broke down just out of warranty. The guy who came to fix it said was a common problem. Not at all impressed and would not buy JL again. I think it cost me £100 for repair so if had gone beko could have just bought a new one but as had paid c£500 for JL felt worth repairing.....

LonelyGoatherd · 28/12/2013 20:46

Ooh thanks all, lots of fridgey freezery food for thought! We have a fab BEKO dishwasher which is why we're considering them, but I want this rather dull purchase to last years.
I really want a smeg.

ExcuseTypos · 29/12/2013 00:41

Ah Lonely, I have a SMEG fridge freezer, it's cream and looks gorgeous.

However it's a pain in the backside- it's very noisy, has no automatic defrost, or even a bleeper for when children go and get ice cream out of the freezer and leave the door open all night.

Stick with one which is modern and convenient and not harking back to the 1950s. Can you tell I don't like my smeg?
