What things do you wish you had done before moving in?

We're in the process of getting our first house - well it is a flat, but it's lovely, and I think there is going to be an overlap between living here and having access to it.

I really don't want to end up with bits of wall I haven't painted because they are behind cupboards. again So am going to paint the walls - but is there anything else you would do, in hindsight, before actually moving in to a place?

I'm already packing furiously here - getting rid of quite a lot of things - and making sure the stuff we use, and the stuff that's just decorative clutter like my old jug collection is separate so we can keep it all stashed in the attic and live more sort of minimalistically.

ha, like we ever could Grin but seriously - what would you do to make the whole thing go more smoothly?

another tip less of the structural stuff, get your curtains cleaned if you're using same ones. it's amazing how much fresher a room feels!

Check before you are left alone in the property, with no one around at the Estate Agents due to it being a Friday afternoon, that the front door actually locks and you are given the correct keys. Might sound obvious but in our case it applied to the backdoor as we had completely overlooked it as who lives in a house without a lockable door Hmm Blush

Oh crikey - good point. When I went to view the EA couldn't get the key in the lock and rang the office, only to find it was the right one - I will check the locks.

Thankyou! (Op here, sorry, under a stupid namechange Grin)

Probably not on everyone's list but check and reinsulate the loft. Once it's full of your stuff you'll be less inclined to empty it out to reinsulate and you'll get the warmth/money savings from the beginning. That said insulation is cheaper in the summer but it's an awful job in the summer.

Thankyou, yes, the loft is apparently full of rubbish and the surveyor said it needs insulating. So we will get onto that asap - well, before putting stuff up there.

I didn;t even know there was a loft, it's in the back bit of the house, you know these Victorian buildings with bits sticking out the back. So not sure if it's really a useable size anyway - but still.

There's no loft in the main part afaik as there are two attic bedrooms. Will check for eaves storage bits though.
