Does anyone use low energy spotlight bulbs?I mean the little ones that are recessed into the ceiling.
Have googled and found lcd ones but need to know what they're like as they are expensive.
Our electricity bill was £187.00 this month and that's with not using the dryer. We have a lot of these spots since having an extension and need to find a cheaper alternative .

think the dichroic ones are meant to be cheaper than LEDs - not as efficient as the LEDs but better than normal halogen ones.

we've been told the light isn't as nice with LEDs as halogen, so a good alternative is to go half and half. £187! That's insane! Ours is £28, and we don't have a small house!

I have just moved into a new house with recessed halogen lights in the ceiling. I hope my bill isnt that much!!!

My mum replaced one of hers with an LED bulb which cost about 10 quid, but the light is strange.

We were told that in October a new type of reduced-energy halogen-substitute bulb will come on the market. The LED ones are supposed to be MUCH dimmer than real halogen, too, so we are waiting until October (at least).
Make sure there is no insulation over recessed halogen bulbs. This presents a big fire hazard.

themoon66 · 21/07/2006 21:26

what do you mean 'insulation over'. They have brass surround and glass over the bulb. I dont know what is in the hole behind them. I've only been in the house 3 weeks and havent had to pull them down to change a bulb as yet.

Thanks for the replies, yes littlefrog £187.00 is bloody insane!Must look into it,didn't think we were such high users,it's been £50/month or thereabouts up until we had an actual reading and now it's ridiculous!
Flack, thanks I'll look into that and wait until October and in the meantime get the candles out!

Loft insulation, like rockwool. Shouldn't lie directly on top of halogen lights because they can overheat and start a fire.
