Do you ever leave your tumble dryer on when you go out?

And if your house burnt down if the tumble dryer caught fire, would insurance cover the damage?

No because we have to put the hose out of the window.

When we first got married we put a tumble dryer on overnight. There was an almighty bang and plumes of yellow smoke when it blew up.

HalfSpamHalfBrisket · 22/12/2013 16:51

No becasue I am a fire warden at school and was told and shown some real horrors on the training course by a senior firefighter.

The drier is turned off, the door opened and the clothes taken out if we are leaving the house. Partly dried clothes can pretty much spontaneously combust if left in the drum.

K8Middleton · 22/12/2013 16:59

Yes of course. If the place burnt down I'd rather be out thanks.

e1y1 · 22/12/2013 17:02

Really half they can combust? I will never ever ever leave ANY appliance on except fridge and freezer as I have no choice.

Not overnight and not when out. I don't think I'm going to die as I don't have a dry tshirt - I have other clothes to wear.

Bit when I switch dryer off and open door, I do leave clothes in the drum. Take it I should not be doing this??

I was told by someone who's house had burned down that dishwashers are the main cause of fires started by white goods. I don't leave my tumble drier or dishwasher on if I'm out but that's mainly because if the house did burn down there would be no one home to save my dog . Before I got the dog I was very blasé about leaving stuff on .

Our cleaner leaves it on when she leaves and has for 15 years. I tend to put it off and put the things to dry elsewhere if I'm around.

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 22/12/2013 17:29

Yes all the time, it never occurred to me not to. Probably still will TBH.

Thanks all for your views.

I have just returned from day out. DH wouldn't let me leave the tumble dryer on when we left this morning because of the fire / insurance thing. I was miffed as our tumble dryer is less than 3 years old, I defluff it regularly and I leave it on quite regularly when I go out. It's fairly noisy and often gets turned off midway when we are in, which can be annoying.

We have max one load per day but as others have said, if I have to be in and awake each time it is used I would struggle to get everything dry.

In summer I always line dry, but this time of year things stay damp for ages and we don't have an airing cupboard. What to do?!

No!! As Michael McIntyre says, you can only trust the fridge...

KrabbyPatty · 22/12/2013 20:15

We put the dryer on when we go to bed or when we go out.

flatmum · 22/12/2013 20:16

All my white goods are 10y old and I often put them on before I go to work. Fridge and freezer always on. I do clean then quite regularly though and turn off at wall when go on holiday.

valiumredhead · 23/12/2013 14:55

No never, due to the fire risk.

Thumbnutstwitchingonanopenfire · 23/12/2013 14:57

I don't any more; but then I do scrupulously remove all the fluff after every tumble load to reduce the risk of fire (of course it doesn't remove the risk of electrical fault but it does reduce the risk from overheating fluff!)
I leave it on overnight though.
