Quick, easy and cheap way to make my house glitter for New Years Eve:)

I'm hosting New Years Eve this year(and New Years Day) and I would like my house to look amazing. Normally for parties I do a good tidy and then bleach all the surfaces, and a good Hoover, but I'd like to go the extra mile this time.

I will admit now that I'm pretty lazy and have a very small budget, but I'm open to suggestions really. Between now and the day I have around 70 hours spare that won't be spent with family/friends or working/sleeping.

I have a spare room that clutter could be hidden in(one friend is staying but she wouldn't care if I'd cleaned or not) and downstairs is all hard floors. Only carpet people would see is the stairs really. I can answer any questions about other details of my house, if anyone needs more, while I'm on breaks at work.

Huge bag of Ikea 8 hour tea lights - on charger plates, in jam jars on safe surfaces, on mirror plates.

I use battery operated dining table lights and if you're savvy perhaps you can get some reduced fairy lights in between NYE?

Sorry didn't finish post - if you have twinkly lights and dim the overhead ones, no one looks at the floor. Wink

If you are worried about the carpet do you have a mate with a Vax you can borrow? I used to loan mine out all the time.

Even better I have a Vax myself! But it's the Vax Pets Zoom it doesn't do shampoo or anything. If I can find a shampoo that dries out so I can Hoover it up that'd be helpful. The cat likes to chill on the stairs during the day and all her black fur sticks like cement.

There's a vanish foam in a pink can that will do the trick, spray, rub in with damp cloth, dry, vacuum. It really appeals to me as I'm a slattern.

Sounds like my kind of thing, hopefully I can pick some up on Sunday when I do the food shop.

So I've cleaned out and tidied my fridge, and scrubbed my hob and oven. Nobody had ever told me how bad it was cleaning an oven, I guess it's some kind of right of passage? Grin

Also after Xmas day we're going to declutter and a load of old stuff can go to charity.

This thread will be perfect for me to weep gently about the incessant dust and cat hair.

How are you getting on now kitty? I would do the mirrors, windows and go around the house with a pack of anti bac wipes . Do the switches, hone. If you want to really clean deeply, do the lampshades.

Also if you could burn some light scented candles. That would add an nice feel to the place. Citronella essential oil from the health shops is so clean! Smells lovely. Maybe don't go too mad with it as not everyone likes the smell.

The varnish mousse smells gorgeous.

Argh the living room is a tip. Still got another family dinner on Sunday but DP has a day off then so he says he's going to stay home and tidy all the presents and stuff. I can do the other things tomorrow before work but food shopping on Saturday so not then. Kitchen is clean at least just needs a good declutter and moving things around(new kettle and posh scales for Christmas)

I think it's just declutter and that that needs doing now.

Always worthwhile getting a few pots of hyacinths for the New Year, better than artificial scents .
