Can you remove the burnt bits on a toaster?

I have a Dualit stainless steel toaster. It's quite old and the area around where the bread is slotted in looks really black (shamingly so). Is there anything I can do to get rid of it? Because it's stainless steel, I don't really want to scour - I'm hoping someone will have a clever trick involving bicarb...

Just googled and it says cream tartar and water to scrub off! Never heard of the stuff lolShock

Cream of tartar - in the baking aisles. Used to use it for making play do when the kids were younger, but other than that I've no idea what it's used for either! Is there not some kind of stainless steel cleaner you can buy at the supermarket?

OMG - I've just cleaned using cream of tartar, it is amazing stuff. The toaster is now spotless (and, according to the packet, if you don't want to use it to clean off burnt bits it will also make "dreamy merengues Wink). Thanks so much for the tip.
