Leaving oven unattended?

Hi all

Do you ever leave the house empty (i.e. pop out for a bit) with things roasting in the oven at, say, 175 degrees?

yes I do it all often, probably weekly.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 13/12/2013 09:45

Yes all the time. How on earth else do you manage to get the dinner ready and do anything outside of the home?

Middleagedmotheroftwo · 13/12/2013 09:46

Yes - why wouldn't you?

vvviola · 13/12/2013 09:47

Nope. Never. But then as a child we had a minor house fire caused by something going wrong when my Mum had left a casserole in the oven at 100 degrees while she went out.

I know ovens now are a lot more reliable but I can't bring myself to take the risk.

normalishdude · 13/12/2013 09:47

I do- but others I know don't and seemed surprised.

All the time - mine has an automatic timer so it can turn itself on when I am out and dinner is ready and waiting when I get home. I always do it on Sundays so that the roast is ready when we get in from Church.

MadeOfStarDust · 13/12/2013 09:49

yes all the time - but ALWAYS set a stop time on our automatic timer - just in case we get delayed.

NigellasDealer · 13/12/2013 09:51

no I nearly set my house on fire doing this once.
I might leave something covered on a 1 setting on an electric hob

FeisMom · 13/12/2013 09:52

Yes I do often

Bunbaker · 13/12/2013 09:53

Of course I do. I often pop a joint in the oven to roast on a Sunday and go out to church.

I would never leave something on the hob though. That is a massive fire risk. And any fire safety officer would say the same.

Abra1d · 13/12/2013 09:54

Yes, often.

normalishdude · 13/12/2013 10:00

No, I wouldn't leave anything on a hob unless it was switched off and cooling down.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 13/12/2013 10:14

Nigellas - you would leave a hob on but not the oven?? That is totally illogical, the hob is far far far more likely to cause a fire than the oven. If something in a pan boils dry then there is a fire risk.

NigellasDealer · 13/12/2013 10:16

well I did say 'an electric hob on the lowest setting'
I know it does sound a bit irrational but I did leave something on what I thought was a low setting in a gas oven and as I said nearly set the house on fire.
I might re-think and just use a slow cooker now you mention it!

Beehatch · 13/12/2013 10:22

Not unless it would automatically shut off after a set time, or you could absolutely guarantee to be back - a foot journey possibly. If out in the car, even a short journey, there is just to much risk of a delay - traffic, small prang and so on.

Kitchen appliances left on are a major contributor to house fires. I don't leave my washing machine on when out for this reason.

Mutley77 · 13/12/2013 15:12

Fire safety officers advise against ever doing leaving the oven on when out of the house. I had a community fire safety assessment and when they told me I was shocked! Must say I still occasionally do it though.

SaltyandSweet · 13/12/2013 17:13

No, but I'm very paranoid about fire risks. No oven, no dishwasher and no dryer on unless someone is home till it's all done. Maybe a bit paranoid though! Grin

welovetopsyandtim · 13/12/2013 17:16

I have often wondered if it would invalidate insurance if house was to burn down.

Steffanoid · 13/12/2013 17:20

nope, never I wont even leave the slow cooker on if we're not in wouldnt even go out for 5 minutes with them on. same for washing machine and dryer

VerySmallSqueak · 13/12/2013 17:21

No - when I was a child we came home to the fire brigade having broke the back door down because the oven had developed a fault and caused fire.

ilovepowerhoop · 14/12/2013 22:00

I do with my electric oven, dont think I would do it if it was gas

Abra1d · 15/12/2013 17:07

I use the timer as well, so I know the oven will switch itself off and not burn the food.

e1y1 · 17/12/2013 01:02

No, no, no, no! Will not leave ANYTHING on (oven, washer, dryer).
