I try to freecycle / recycle as much aa possible. we've
I have the following things that need to go for the sake of space and tidyness:

  • stacks of bubble wrap and padded envelopes (I buy lots online but don't sell...)
  • loads of carrier bags
  • loads of clothes hangers
  • loads of old trainers

They've either had no interest on freecycle or can't be recycled, or at least not easily, via kerbside collection. (I can't be faffing with trips across town to the dump / recycling HQ or to find a shoe bank.)

So why do I still feel guilty about sticking them in the black bin??! Help!! Talk sense into me please!

You've done what you can, by the sounds of things - and you're clearly far more eco-minded than most people.

Re the carrier bags though - most big supermarkets have bag recycling boxes.

BrownSauceSandwich · 10/12/2013 20:17

Is it the landfill that you're bothered about, or is this one of those crazy hoarding things, and you miss all the crap?

If the former, you have my sympathy... I've done it myself, especially the Jiffy bags. For future reference, loads of supermarkets take ANY carrier bags for recycling, not just their own. That goes for delivery drivers too. And lots of supermarkets have shoe recycling outside. Charity shops sometimes want clothes hangers, but the best thing is to religiously leave them behind when you buy clothes.

Given the price of bubble wrap surprised no-one wants it for moving house. Obviously you shouldn't make a special trip to the dump, but is there no way you can go en route to somewhere?

all these things can be easily kept out of landfill. Charity shops will want the hangers, there are shoe banks in towns and many other places, there is carrier bag recycling at most supermarkets.

Admittedly I'm in a different country but my bubble wrap went in a few hours on the local version of freecycle. I mentioned 'ideal for a house move' in the ad.

Honu · 12/12/2013 07:19

Our local charity shop has a message up asking for bubble wrap

principalitygirl · 13/12/2013 22:53

thx for the replies. yeah it's the landfill that bothers me.
managed to take trainers to supermarket shoe bank today.Smile bizarrely they now recycle clothes hangers but not carrier bags...
my local charity shop uses their own branded hangers as I offered mine there before unsuccessfully. I'll see if they want bubble wrap though and will reoffer it on freecycle once more.

Here in Germany all plastics and metal can be recycled - is there anywhere you could recycle the bubble wrap and metal hangers? I agree that the charity shop might be happy to have the bubble wrap to wrap trinkets and ornaments when they are bought.

Does the charity shop not need bags? Here in Norn Irn we have to pay 5p per bag these days, mayeb you could eBay them?
