Mould on bathroom ceiling

Hercy · 09/12/2013 22:59

We have a windowless bathroom, and the ceiling above the bath has started to get ball mould spots all over it.

We fairly recently had a stronger fan put in, but I think the mould had started to appear before this and has since grown/spread. So even if the fan is now strong enough to stop any build up of condensation that could turn into mould, I would have to make sure I got rid of everything already there.

It's in such an awkward place (can't put a ladder in the bath!) and I'm not quite tall enough to be able to scrub it, that I've let it build up and get quite bad.

Any tips for dealing with it - both mould in general and the awkward position would be much appreciated.

We do also wedge the door open after showers nod have windows open upstairs, so hopefully, if I can get rid of it completely now, it shouldn't be a problem again (fingers crossed).

Thanks in advance :)

Sorry should be "black" mould spots in the first sentence, not ball.

Dettol mould and mildew remover works well. I would also leave the bathroom door open all the time and a window on the same floor open to ventilate the place

Remove the mould using bleach (wear goggles, be careful). Then paint with Zinsser Permawhite.

Get a strong piece of board the width of the bath and the length of the ladder splay plus a bit. You can put the ladder on this and reach. Done this to decorate. Or borrow/buy one of those decorators ladders?

Keep the bathroom warm and leave the fan on. I wouldn't recommend leaving the door open, as you will b introducing too much humidity into the rest of the house.

Can you get close enough to spray with the dettol stuff pp mentioned? Then use a mop to wipe.
Have you got mould resistant paint? That helps a little.
Dehumidifiers are good as well.

sorry to hear this - it is disheartening - we too have a problem with mould a bit.

a bit of diluted bleach is supposed to kill the spores... but tbh i find it never goes 100% and be careful of eyes/skin - could u use a sponge mop to sand & scrub it? save climbing & you will be a pole's length away!

would get the mould resistant paint like the post above says

I also have lots of those 'moisture trap' containers full of crystals that absorb the moisture

I get 99p ones in QD - they are disposable & cheap and do work...

we wipe shower walls with a squeegee thing after showering & my does wipe bathroom walls with a towel but is time-consuming!!!

HG mould spray is great, no scrubbing needed.

Suddengeekgirl · 10/12/2013 12:19

Polycell do a mould killer treatment. We used that on the bathroom ceiling and then pInted with dulux kitchen and bathroom paint (think it has something to kill mould/ fungus and repel water). The bathroom ceiling stayed clear for 5 years - have moved since but bet it's still white! :)

Ours is painted with paint meant for the outside of houses. Has been mould free for years even over the shower cubicle which was always worse bit.

Just thought I would report back to say that detol mould and mildew spray is fantastic. I just squirted it on, left it 10 minutes then wiped away. Thanks for the tip!
