I need help Hmm
The rental I have been in a couple of months I think maybe the window seals on some windows are failing as I have mould coming up around some but not others and lots condensation.

Does the landlord have any obligation?

What is the best way to.keep it at bay?

Ventilation.
We have a spray cleaner rrom Robert dyas called HG something or other.

Your landlord is obliged to make repairs but equally you should ckean and air the property.

Clean!
Damn my fat fingers.

Does the landlord have any obligation?

if the mould comes from a structural problem, yes.

what you can do:

  • use kitchen and bathroom extractor fans each time you cook or use the bathroom
  • ventilate, all that moisture from sweating, washing, breathing, cooking, drying has to go somewhere. just open the windows regularly
  • don't dry washing indoors. if you have to ventilate ventilate ventilate and us the heating. or shut the washing into a room with a dehumidifier running.

Defo need to open windows

go round every morning and wipe up the condensation, which is caused by the laws of physics. Squeeze out the cloth and put it OUTSIDE to dry.

open windows for a few minutes in the morning - obviously close before you go out.

get rid of mould with a bleach spray.

condensation is the tenant's fault. Damp is that of the landlord. If the windows are misting up between the panes then that is the landlord's problem, a building issue. Sounds like most of your problems are condensation and you can solve them.

'go round every morning and wipe up the condensation, which is caused by the laws of physics' - this made me laugh!!

Here is what I do. Get one of those mould sprays and an old toothbrush. Decant some of the spray into an old jam jar, and dip an old toothbrush in it. Have another glass jar full of water ready. Brush the seals gently, getting into all the nooks and crannies and rinse the toothbrush periodically in the water.

Have some kitchen towel on hand to mop up. Don't spray the seals directly because they are narrow and if you put too much spray on, it will run taking black gunk with it and bleaching everything in sight. Wipe any spray off that gets on the windows with a bit of kitchen towel or a white ecloth and be careful not to get any spray on the curtains or floor or walls or carpet (it can be best to remove the curtains altogether and put down some newspaper, just to be on the safe side).

Once the spray has had a few hours to work, go over the seals with a wet wipe, getting off as much dreck as you can. I sometimes wrap the wipe in an old, blunt knife so that I can get right into the corners - but be careful not to damage the seal if you do this.

Once you've done this, use an old towel to wipe off condensation every morning and you should find you have the problem under control. :)

could have suggested that the OP stops breathing at night but that seemed less than helpful... :-)

Struggling and special - thank you - i needed to hear that in a blunt way. I don't think there is moisture inside the glazing- ergo I have to get this under control myself and I didn't understand that part. Actually I remember my dad doing all the wiping when I was a kid.
I do think it's a bit extreme in this house as I never dry washing indoors but hey ho. I'm a big girl I will cope. Thanks mn Grin

Don't blame yourself- it sounds like you have crap double glazing (not bad enough to be able to ask the landlord to do anything, but enough to be a pain in the ass to wipe down every morning).

We have cheap windows in our house, and I have to go round whenever it's cold doing the same thing. Bah, humbug! One day I will replace them with lovely eco-friendly windows. Until then, I have a good supply of old towels at the ready!
