Help! Cigarette smoke out of a suit?

DH has just had to go and do a home visit (rare in his job) to the home of an older gentleman who is a very heavy smoker. He's always been a non smoker himself and as an ex smoker I can smell it at 20 paces and I;m at the stage where the smell really does make me feel ill.

Suit is dry clean only and I'd rather not do that if I can sort it another way. Can I pop it in the tumble dryer with some fabric sheets on cool for half an hour?

I shall strip him in the hall when he walks in, like that scene in Monsters Inc where they find boo and shave him hehe Grin

Can you pop it out on the line? The wind blowing through it should clear the smell.

MrsBennetsEldest · 06/12/2013 12:17

You could put it on hangers and hang from the washing line, give it a good airing.

See now there is the problem, I don't have a washing line Blush. Did away with it when we redid the garden and I only use the dryer now.

I second the washing line.

when it was legal to smoke in pubs and clubs? My clothes often smelt if smoke. I'd hang them on the washing line. If you don't have a line, do you have an airer?

GhostsInSnow · 06/12/2013 12:57

I did have an airer, then DS moved into his own flat and if it wasn't nailed down took it Hmm

I could take it over to Mums, she does have a washing line so I could get her to do it for me Grin

hang it up in the bathroom during a bath or shower. Somehow, as it dries out after the steam, the smell seems to come away.

Best of all, if the bathroom has an effective extractor fan, it will whisk the smell away.

when i used to spend time with smoky people, I would put my suit in the airing cupboard overnight, and the smell would mostly go.

Stuff the sleeves and trousers with white paper infused with lavender oil and hang in front of an open window.

Thanks guys, have tumbled it with a dryer sheet for ten minutes and it's not as bad as it was, but will hang in the bathroom later. Poor DH will smell of a mix of comfort, soap and glory and lavender come monday morning Grin

you always use a dryer??????? Even on warm sunny days??????

wow.

unadulterateddad · 07/12/2013 11:39

Febreze works for me when I've been out at a smelly site, really does take the smell away

gobbin · 07/12/2013 12:36

I did the same as the OP specialsubject and use the dryer for every wash. The extra cost per year means a few less takeaways >shrugs

GhostsInSnow · 07/12/2013 16:03

special yes, all the time.
I can afford to do it.
There are only 3 adults at home so I wash once a week, thats one dryer load. For me thats not worth the hassle of pegging out plus the added bonus that most of the time what comes out of the dryer only needs shaking and putting away rather that ironing.
