If you are strugging with C.H.A.O.S. (can't have anyone over syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (something that undermines family fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of chat, support Brew, Wine and Cake along the way.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do someting more interesting instead!

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around next month again!

We advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be inundated! All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

[And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.]

More info here on getting started and Flying lessons. Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings. Don't be put off by the barf-tastic language of the site - the underlying system is sound!

Thanks to BlueEyeshadow and SlimChance for the November thread. Thanks

All welcome!! And remember that December is the new January! Grin

Oh, WhoKnows, thank you for mentioning oven cleaning earlier. I was inspired by you, but when I mentioned it to DH he was so worried about the fumes of OvenPride triggering his asthma (which is a bit troublesome at the moment) that he spent hours scrubbing at the oven with bicarbonate of soda to prove that I didn't need it. Result! Xmas Grin

WhoKnowsWhereTheMistletoes · 15/12/2013 23:19

That certainly is a result Toffee!

Silly - your trip sounds amazing, I bet Chris Kamara was great fun! What a fabulous thing to do for all those very special childrern.

I've only skimmed through, it's been a busier than expected weekend. DD was back to full strength after her tummy bug by yesterday, but I bent down and pulled a muscle in my back, so have had to take things a bit easierr than usual, however Dh has stepped up to the mark and done hoovering etc. DD had extra ballet for exam practice yesterday morning, so I went with her and DH had to take DS to hockey, DS played really well and was asked to play in a tournament today, which I took him to and he was brilliant, scored 5 goals and was totally focussed and really well behaved off the pitch too. Anyway, this afternoon went to a friend's house for mulled wine and mince pies which was lovely, but then had to walk DD to her swimming lesson in rain and wind (it's not far, but was one of the few occasions I would willingly have taken the car less than a mile, however the mulled wine put paid to that). Then home for Strictly results and SPOTY. Just need to put everyone's clothes out for the morning, night all.

Swanhilda · 16/12/2013 00:15

today went a bit better than normal, but a fair bit of change in the air!!!!

ds2 went to drama
ds1 sang at Kew Gardens with his choir
dd went to church

Grandma and Grandpa (my parents) visited in late afternoon, and I managed to assemble the faulty saltdough advent candle holder Blush, surround it with dried rose buds and force some candles into it, bake cookies, and make some excellent egg sandwiches.

Dd has hit puberty at 11nearly 12 years - this evening she confided to me... I am in a slight state of shock, although she is very tall. Two years ago we were buying her Sylvanians (not that she liked them much Hmm She has been absolutely sweet about it, I am blessed to have such a lovely daughter. Dh says that it why she has been so bolshy the last few days...I hate men who blame women's moods on PMS! After all it has to be said that men are in a perpetual mood caused by their hormones....

It has made me realise that her twin brother, ds2 (whilst behaving in a very childish manner a good deal of the time) is also nearly a teen and we need to acknowledge that he is also growing up, has responsibilities, will be a man. Strong stuff really, it doesn't seem a moment since they were all babies, especially with my SIL having twins recently, and reminiscing with her.

done
ds2's RE homework scribed Hmm
tantrum from ds2 resolved
tidied utility a bit
washed stuff
cooked stuff

ToffeeWhirl · 16/12/2013 00:39

Oh, Swan, that is a shock, but she's still only young in spite of this. You just need time to get used to this development. (Having said that, I have absolutely no experience of this as DS1 still hasn't hit puberty).

So much for an early night. Am sitting up with DS1 because his OCD is bad and he needs my support. Oh well. At least I get to browse on MN whilst he tries to sleep.

Honu · 16/12/2013 07:04

Nope - you are all babies! I have children (real live ones, not possibles) who are older than many of you. And a 1-year-old granddaughter. However, I don't feel any older than you, and in the housekeeping stakes I am a mere infant, and an incompetent one at that, so I hope you will let me stay. It's where your head is, not your chronological age that matters.

I have followed your story about J from the beginning silly and you have often made me tear up. I am so glad you and he managed to make it to see FC. I envy you your power with words - do you use this in RL?

Despite my attempt at 3 cards / day I have not always rarely managed this so am now about to log off mn and finish the last few

CallingAllEngels · 16/12/2013 07:40

Swan -ditto on men blaming women's moods on pmt. I always remind DH that a) if he pulled his weight with childcare then I wouldn't need to be in such a mood and b) if my mood is caused by hormones what's his excuse for being such a grumpy arse?

I'm early 30s too Silly, though DH is a decade older. Honu...age is just a number...Sometimes always I forget how old I am. I still feel like I'm 25 (which is the age I was when I met DH...stopped counting after that!). When people ask me how old I am, the first thing I have to do is say (out loud), "What year is it again...?"

Toffee hope you managed to get some sleep. Must try that oven psychology on my dh!

well done to ds who knows and your ds too feet.

fires sounds familiar dizzy!

DS tottered into our room at about 10pm, fell asleep, I put him back, but at some point found his way back in (woke ap at about 1am to find him trying to burrow underneath me). I know I should put him back but I wouldn't get anysleep. Just need to get through the last week of term and then I'll be stricter Blush

Oops, just noticed I said in my post yesterady that bil works part time, but he's ft and that's one of the issues. I wish dh was more pt than he is and I could work more (it would make more financial sense and be better for m y mental health...how do people stay sane with toddlers?!).

CallingAllEngels · 16/12/2013 07:43

To do
go to hospital to make appt and pick up blood form
pick up potatoes
Town for newborn present and new jeans (my 2 smartish pairs ahev died within a few weeks of each other)
Post bloody cards
outside time for ds
washing up
washing
marking!
write teachers performance for Christmas show...not doing things last minute...oh no!

Slimchance · 16/12/2013 08:49

Ha! Honu - us oldies (but mere infants when it comes to Flying) need to stick together on this thread! It was revealed that one of the guests at lunch yesterday hadn't been born when dh and I first met Shock.

Thanks to your lovely daughter Swan bless her

Engels I always remind dh that I needn't be wicked witch of the North if he wasn't continually playing the role of 'Fun Daddy'. DD drove us nuts last night, coming downstairs four times, each with a different excuse worthy of a 5 yr old not a 10 yr old and each time it was me who had to administer stern words and take her back upstairs, while dh stared as if in a trance at Sports Personality of the Year as though nothing was happening ... arrrggghhh....it's so infuriating when he sits there like a stone pillar seemingly oblivious to anything that is going on around him .... it's so bloody rude apart from anything else.

Hope your ds1 is OK Toffee and sorry about your friend Sad

Take care of that back Whoknows (another one very impressed by your oven cleaning)

Have exactly the same objectives for the week as ÿou Blue so am with you in spirit!

Oh dear Gossip hope your shoulder is OK and that you have a less stressful week. YOu never, ever, need to complain about being "flaky" on this thread. It is virtually mandatory Grin!!!

Feetheart "He is only 8 and I can't see anything in life stopping him if he puts his mind to it Xmas Grin" Congratulations to your ds and what a lovely, lovely post!!!! [Dabs corner of eye with handkerchief again]

Goth I think you have reached a round-up record!!!! [And thanks for wrapping cartoon btw - meant to say earlier - although in rl resembles a scene from one of those hoarder programmes!!!]

Waves to Silly Bitchy Just Alice Dizzy PA Ellie Castle Pushme Nicknacks *Lauren and everyone else!

Well I went to bed knackered and woke up knackered. Also have intermittent stomach cramps (bit worried I have poisoned all of our guests yesterday - will email them - but no one else here affected - yet).

Bit downhearted that dd has gone off to school for her last day of exams not having had a good night's sleep (despite putting her to bed at a decent time), not having had good things to eat (despite being offered a selection of very healthy grub) and not having done much revision (despite virtually dragging her to the office yesterday and sitting next to her while she revised geography and history and I wrapped presents) frankly she didn't every try.

You can lead a horse to water and all that ... .

I feel really, really frustrated and discouraged. I know it's being properly over the top to say that I feel hurt that we put so much effort in and it all seems to be thrown back in your face, but that's how I feel right now!!!!

Had better get over myself and get on

Ta da
Morning routine inc dw, wm, s&s, rabbits
(+ ironing of school uniform and polishing of school shoes that didn't get done yesterday)
wrapped another present
treated wine stains on table cloth
dining room table hot spot

To do:
take down "autumn" nature table display [bit late with this to put it mildly Blush] and hoover that area and get it ready for Christmas tree delivery tomorrow
wrap presents, write cards
school run
dd tutoring
objective for day = to get back in to bed as soon as humanly possible tonight, having wrapped as many presents and written as many cards as humanly possible!

Have a good week everyone! And thank God for this thread! Don't think I would survive without it!

Slimchance · 16/12/2013 08:54

Yep i caught up on sleep. almost 24hrs straight. was lovely. Feeling much less virusy too so that helps. about to grab a coffee jump in the shower and shove the washing machine on. Tons and tons to do today.

Swanhilda · 16/12/2013 09:25

That thread is hilarious Xmas Grin

SC [soothes brow] It will all be over soon. School term will have ended and she will be safe at home. No-one can sleep before an exam, it is well known that stressful events prevent one from sleeping.

I am Xmas Shock at all those presents and cards. You are a festive heroine. Which reminds me, I really have given up this year Blush So far dh has bought one present, and I have bought about 3 stocking fillers and sent off some baby gifts (which don't really count, except my SIL thought it was a xmas present [evilGrin Oh and one present for my sister.

Next week you will be laughing and I will be crying...Xmas Grin

Toffee you are a lovely mum to ds1. Ds2 was very anxious this morning and dh was telling me about his "irrationa"l fears of getting a detention as he cannot find 3 of this school books (after losing his bag and refinding it). And I just thought, for him it is not irrational, it is a logical extension of all the rules and regulations. All you can do is talk people down, you can't tell them they are irrational. I got a desperate call from him when he got to school begging me to bring the lost books in, and I had to explain the books weren't here so I couldn't bring them in, but I would ring up his teacher to discuss it. Hopefully that will solve problem. If not, heads will ROLL>>> [more and more thinking about home edding....[grrr]

Swanhilda · 16/12/2013 09:30

Ooh I forgot, I managed to drive to Brentford this morning, in semi-darkness/morning traffic! Another thing ticked off my push the frontiers list. Tried to come back on the dual carriage way from Chiswick and had to turn back though as was too scared Hmm Will try that another day, when it is quieter and lighter...

This morning, Dh is SUPER GRUMPY. And we are going to buy a tree, which will make him grumpier still, as he finds English trees very defective Xmas Confused and complains bitterly about their trunks, angle of branches.

Cleaning lady is here this morning, so I am delaying dealing with that by being on here. She is meant to be at my mother's but my mother has said she can't face having a cleaning lady this morning - Xmas GrinBlush

hello, going to do limited flying today as shoulder still hurts, and figuring out just how much I can get done with left hand/arm, guessing it wont be a lot as its taking forever to type this post. I mainly want to do washing today and possibly hoover, also need to water the tree, just had a phone call from the repair centre who have just told me that I have to pay £400 excess for the car, I thought as it wasn't my fault I don't have to pay? is that right?

GossipWitch · 16/12/2013 11:51

Oh I think its because I'm getting a courtesy car...

GossipWitch · 16/12/2013 12:03

Having a ARGH!!! and CBA morning!

It started well when I did everything I am supposed too last night - laid out clothes, packed lunches, sorted bags ,d/w/, w/m and t/d etc.

But since coming back from the school run.. I am struggling..

Spent 3 hours in kitchen, cleaning out fridge
2x w/m
t/d
d/w
washed floor
put away shopping

but kitchen still a mess!!

cleared up dog poo from garden
wash cloakroom floor

Just feel the whole house needs sorting !!

Plan is to spend 10/15 in each room and to stop for 1/2 hour before school run to have lunch and relax!
