cleaning a ceramic hob

How do I clean off burnt water stains on my ceramic hob without damaging it? I've tried scrubbing (gently) with soapy water but it doesn't budge. I use Hob Brite to clean it but this doesn't remove the burnt on stuff.

I usually just use Hob Brite and rub hard with a cloth. There is a Hob Brite scraper but I've never tried it...

Bamaluz · 24/11/2013 19:21

Rub some washing up liquid on and leave it soak for a bit, then clean it off later.

Alwayscheerful · 24/11/2013 19:23

Use a scraper and astonish type paste.

stopthenoise · 24/11/2013 21:38

I've tried the washing up liquid but didn't work. Unless I'm not scrubbing hard enough Grin The oven was given to us by a friend and the stains are pretty burnt on. It's only on one ring but it really bugs me. I thought there might be some miracle potion to remove it! I will keep at it with the washing up liquid and hob brite and might invest in a scraper. Thanks for your replies Smile

Just been out and bought a ceramic topped cooker today. Glad to see this thread.

I use Oven Mate Cleaning Gel from Lakeland on my hod. Works like magic. Fab inside the oven as well. Don't get any on wooden work tops though as it leaves black marks.

stopthenoise · 24/11/2013 23:07

nightsky If you use hob brite on it from new you shouldn't have any cleaning issues with it.
littlepumpkinpie is oven pride the one where you put stuff in bags?

Yes that's right orange box about £4 use some of the liquid on the burnt bits should bring it off a treat.

Astonish in a blue tub is, well, astonishingly good

SingSongMummy · 24/11/2013 23:22

Cif and microfibre cloth work wonders on mine.

mousmous · 24/11/2013 23:26

don't let it get too dirty in the first place.
wipe immediately after a spill.
soak stains (damp kitchen cloth on top of stain for a couple of hours).
scrub with cream cleaner (look out, some are not suitable for ceramic).

thenightsky · 24/11/2013 23:33

Do they get scratched? DH ruined our previous stainless steel hob by scrubbing with a green scourer. I don't want him near it if he's going to ruin this one too.

Alfiecat · 24/11/2013 23:34

I use dishwasher powder on mine, mixed into a paste with water and left to work for half an hour or so.

mousmous · 24/11/2013 23:35

yes, they can scratch.
careful with sugar on them and don't use metal scourers.

stopthenoise · 25/11/2013 17:01

mousmous the oven was given to us by a friend and one of the rings was already stained. Our old one died and until we can afford a new one it will have to do. Our old one was very well looked after (apart from it conking out)
thenightsky hob brite should protect it from scratches but you do need to be very careful about what you use on it.
Thanks for all your replies, I am going to get some oven pride and Astonish tomorrow and give them a go.

If the surface is flat glass then careful use of a flat blade - like a Stanley knife blade (just not in the handle IYSWIM) seems to be okay. Of course it might just scratch yours to death.

That and the anti-limescale cleaners, even anti-limescale toilet cleaner (well cleaned afterwards of course) should take off the water 'residue' (which might just be limescale from the evaporated water).

Gross. sorry.

hillian · 25/11/2013 19:05

Aren't they made of plastic that's made to look like smoked glass?

The easiest way to scratch them that I've found is to drag a full saucepan across them!

Frontdoorstep · 25/11/2013 20:16

Hob brite isn't very good, you need a different brand. Easy do is a lot better than hob brite.

thenightsky · 25/11/2013 22:16

I cannot believe they are made of plastic... that would melt! And they wouldn't be able to call them 'ceramic' if they were plastic.
